The progressive accumulation of amyloid beta (Aβ) pathology in the brain has been associated with aberrant neuronal network activity and poor cognitive performance in preclinical mouse models of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Presently, our understanding of the mechanisms driving pathology-associated neuronal dysfunction and impaired information processing in the brain remains incomplete. Here, we assessed the impact of advanced Aβ pathology on spatial information processing in the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) of 18-month knock-in (APP KI) mice as they explored contextually novel and familiar open field arenas in a two-day, four-session recording paradigm.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate a guided internet- and smartphone-based gratitude intervention’s effectiveness in reducing repetitive negative thinking among adults, focusing on cognitive, emotional, and behavioral aspects of gratitude.
  • Participants (200 adults) were randomly assigned to either receive the gratitude intervention over four sessions or join a control waiting list, with their repetitive negative thinking assessed at three months, and additional evaluations at six weeks and six months.
  • Results showed that those who completed the gratitude intervention reported significantly lower levels of repetitive negative thinking and improvements in depression and anxiety symptoms, suggesting that gratitude-focused interventions could be a beneficial approach for managing these issues.

Nurse-delivered sleep restriction therapy to improve insomnia disorder in primary care: the HABIT RCT.

Health Technol Assess

August 2024

Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Oxford, UK.

Background: Insomnia is a prevalent and distressing sleep disorder. Multicomponent cognitive-behavioural therapy is the recommended first-line treatment, but access remains extremely limited, particularly in primary care where insomnia is managed. One principal component of cognitive-behavioural therapy is a behavioural treatment called sleep restriction therapy, which could potentially be delivered as a brief single-component intervention by generalists in primary care.

Low-intensity mindfulness and cognitive-behavioral therapy for social anxiety: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

BMC Psychiatry

March 2024

Department of Psychosomatic Medicine, School of Medicine, International University of Health and Welfare, 4-3, Kozunomori, Narita-Shi, Chiba, 286-8686, Japan.

Background: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) effectively improves the clinical symptoms of social anxiety disorder. However, there are non-responders who cannot decrease their cost/probability bias significantly; hence, their social anxiety symptoms remain unaddressed. Mindfulness training and cognitive-behavioral approaches promote a reduction in cost/probability bias and social anxiety symptoms.

Although reducing students' aggressive behaviors and improving their creativity are both important commitments of educators, they are usually treated independently as unrelated tasks. However, cumulative evidence suggests potential links between aggression and creativity, not only from the perspectives of personality traits and psychological development, but also from their shared cognitive mechanisms. This implies that there may be an approach to achieving these two goals through a single intervention.
