Acoustic Exaggeration Enhances Speech Discrimination in Young Autistic Children.

Autism Res

December 2024

Psychiatry and Addictology Department, CIUSSS-NIM Research Center, University of Montreal, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Child-directed speech (CDS), which amplifies acoustic and social features of speech during interactions with young children, promotes typical phonetic and language development. In autism, both behavioral and brain data indicate reduced sensitivity to human speech, which predicts absent, decreased, or atypical benefits of exaggerated speech signals such as CDS. This study investigates the impact of exaggerated fundamental frequency (F0) and voice-onset time on the neural processing of speech sounds in 22 Chinese-speaking autistic children aged 2-7 years old with a history of speech delays, compared with 25 typically developing (TD) peers.

The smaller-incision new-generation implantable miniature telescope (SING IMT) represents an advancement over the previous model, WA-IMT, serving as a unilateral prosthetic device for patients with late-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This study aims to report changes in multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) 6 months post-SING IMT implantation. In this case series, we prospectively evaluated a cohort of phakic patients with late-stage AMD who underwent SING IMT implantation at the Ophthalmology Unit, University of Bari Aldo Moro, Italy.

Corporal punishment (CP) is a widely extended practice within Ecuadorian households. However, there is international pressure to ban it, CP is not considered a topic of relevance either for researchers nor public policy, and there is a lack of information about this phenomenon, its causes, and effects in this specific context. That is why this research aims to identify common beliefs supporting CP usage inside homes since beliefs have been found to shape individual behavior at the same time they are socially and culturally produced.

Multiyear and seasonal wide-scale indicators for French surface waters contamination by WFD substances.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

December 2024

Office Français de la Biodiversité (OFB), 5 Allée Félix Nadar, 94300, Vincennes, France.

This study offers an unprecedented valuation of the French surface waters WFD chemical monitoring dataset, covering 101 substances (metals, industrial and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), plant protection product (PPP) and biocides active substances, combustion residues) measured monthly on 4000 sites of the 6 main continental river basins, during 12 years (2009-2020). The concentration data were first made comparable through an original process removing the bias induced by the space-and-time heterogeneity of the monitoring labs performance, to gather a reference workable set of monthly contamination indicators. These were then used to display the substances' seasonal and interannual timeseries, revealing, e.

The long-term success of dental implants depends on the ability of soft tissues to form a protective barrier, limiting pathogen infiltration into peri-implant tissues. Here, we investigated the impact of an anodized surface modification on mucosal integration. Scanning electron microscopy and surface chemistry characterization were carried out on miniaturized implants.
