Apart from being key structures of modern microelectronics, metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) junctions are highly promising electrodes for artificial leaves, i.e. photoelectrochemical cells that can convert sunlight into energy-rich fuels. Here, we demonstrate that homogeneous Si/SiO/Ni MIS junctions, employed as photoanodes, can be functionalized with a redox-active species and simultaneously converted into high-photovoltage inhomogeneous MIS junctions by electrochemical dissolution. We also report on the considerable enhancement of performance towards urea oxidation, induced by this process. Finally, we demonstrate that both phenomena can be employed synergistically to design highly-efficient Si-based photoanodes. These findings open doors for the manufacturing of artificial leaves that can generate H under solar illumination using contaminated water.

Pre-mRNA splicing, carried out in the nucleus by a large ribonucleoprotein machine known as the spliceosome, is functionally and physically coupled to the mRNA surveillance pathway in the cytoplasm called nonsense mediated mRNA decay (NMD). The NMD pathway monitors for premature translation termination signals, which can result from alternative splicing, by relying on the exon junction complex (EJC) deposited on exon-exon junctions by the spliceosome. Recently, multiple genetic screens in human cell lines have identified numerous spliceosome components as putative NMD factors.

Congenital ocular malformations originate from defective morphogenesis during early eye development and cause 25% of childhood blindness. Formation of the eye is a multi-step, dynamic process; it involves evagination of the optic vesicle, followed by distal and ventral invagination, leading to the formation of a two-layered optic cup with a transient optic fissure. These tissue folding events require extensive changes in cell shape and tissue growth mediated by cytoskeleton mechanics and intercellular adhesion.

Muscleblind-like proteins (MBNLs) are a family of RNA-binding proteins that play essential roles in the regulation of RNA metabolism. Beyond their canonical role in RNA regulation, MBNL proteins have emerged as key players in the pathogenesis of Myotonic Dystrophy type 1 (DM1). In DM1, sequestration of MBNL proteins by expansion of the CUG repeat RNA leads to functional depletion of MBNL, resulting in deregulated alternative splicing and aberrant RNA processing, which underlie the clinical features of the disease.

Background: Adult spinal deformities (ASDs) requiring long fusions to the lumbosacral junction are notorious for L5-S1 pseudarthrosis and hardware-related complications. The minimally invasive surgery antepsoas (MIS-ATP) technique allows for substantial anterior column reconstruction thereby reducing the risk of posterior hardware-related complications.
