AI Article Synopsis

  • Interleukin 36 cytokines, particularly IL-36β and IL-36γ, are linked to autoimmune diseases, but their specific role in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) is not well understood.
  • A study measured serum levels of IL-36α, IL-36β, and IL-36γ in 50 NMOSD patients and 30 healthy controls, finding significantly elevated IL-36β and IL-36γ in NMOSD patients.
  • Elevated IL-36β levels were positively associated with disease activity indicators such as relapse rates and disability scores, suggesting they could serve as important biomarkers for NMOSD.

Article Abstract

Background: Interleukin 36 (IL-36) cytokines belong to the IL-1 family and play an important role in some autoimmune diseases. However, the relationship between IL-36 and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) remains unclear.

Methods: We determined serum IL-36α, IL-36β and IL-36γ levels and assessed correlations with clinical characteristics in 50 NMOSD patients and 30 healthy controls (HC).

Results: The concentrations of serum IL-36β and IL-36γ were significantly higher in patients with NMOSD than in HCs and decreased during remission. Serum IL-36β levels were positively correlated with the annual relapse rate (ARR), spinal cord lesion length and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores.

Conclusions: Serum IL-36β and IL-36γ levels were related to disease activity in NMOSD patients and may be important biomarkers of NMOSD.

Background: Selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) are small-molecule compounds that exert agonist and antagonist effects on androgen receptors in a tissue-specific fashion. Because of their performance-enhancing implications, SARMs are increasingly abused by athletes. To date, SARMs have no Food and Drug Administration approved use, and recent case reports associate the use of SARMs with deleterious effects such as drug-induced liver injury, myocarditis, and tendon rupture.

Objective: Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is a rare condition marked by inflammation and fibrosis affecting the peritoneal and retroperitoneal soft tissues. In recent years, the identification of IgG4-related diseases has brought to light a significant association with fibrous disorders, including RPF, which were once considered independent. In this comprehensive cohort study, we performed a comparative analysis of the demographic, clinical, laboratory, histopathological, and therapeutic characteristics between patients with IgG4-related RPF and those with idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (iRPF).

Vitamin D status and its determinants in German elite athletes.

Eur J Appl Physiol

January 2025

Department of Exercise Physiology and Sports Therapy, Institute of Sports Science, Justus Liebig University Giessen, Kugelberg 62, 35394, Giessen, Germany.

Purpose: This study investigated elite German athletes to (1) assess their serum 25(OH)D levels and the prevalence of insufficiency, (2) identify key factors influencing serum 25(OH)D levels, and (3) analyze the association between serum 25(OH)D levels and handgrip strength.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 474 athletes (231 female), aged 13-39 years (mean 19.3 years), from ten Olympic disciplines were included.

Age but not vitamin D is related to sarcopenia in vitamin D sufficient male elderly in rural China.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Endocrinology, The Affiliated Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing, 210028, China.

This study aimed to identify the correlation of serum 25(OH)D level with sarcopenia and its components in Chinese elderly aged 65 years and above from rural areas. A total of 368 Chinese elderly aged 65 years and above in rural areas were enrolled. Indicators of muscle mass and strength, including the appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM), skeletal muscle index (SMI) and hand grip strength (HGS) were measured.
