What makes β-NaYF:Er,Yb such a successful luminescent thermometer?

Nanoscale

January 2025

Inorganic Photoactive Materials, Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Universitätsstraße 1, 40225 Düsseldorf, Germany.

Luminescence thermometry has emerged as a promising approach for remote, non-invasive temperature sensing at the nanoscale. One of the simplest approaches in that regard is single-ion luminescence Boltzmann thermometry that exploits thermal coupling between two radiatively emitting levels. The working horse example for this type of luminescence thermometry is undoubtedly the green-emitting upconversion phosphor β-NaYF:Er,Yb exploiting the thermal coupling between the two excited H and S levels of Er for this purpose.

Pyrazine (tppz) and 5-sulfosalicylic acid (HSSA) mixed-bridging Cd(II)-CP, {[Cd(HSSA)(tppz)]} (), is highly luminescent, and the emission has been quenched selectively by Al in the presence of other cations, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 43.9 nM (1.18 ppb).

Chemiluminescence offers ultrasensitive imaging for the diagnosis of a variety of diseases by removing the interference from excitation light sources. Here, we prepared two chemiluminescent metal-organic frameworks (Mn-ADA and Zn-ADA) by using (2,2')-3,3'-(anthracene-9,10-diyl)diacrylic acid (ADA) as a ligand. In Mn-ADA and Zn-ADA, the Mn atoms and Zn atoms are six-coordinated and eight-coordinated, respectively, and their frameworks are different in spatial structure.

Chemical mechanisms describe the atmospheric transformations of organic and inorganic species and connect air emissions to secondary species such as ozone, fine particles, and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) like formaldehyde. Recent advances in our understanding of several chemical systems and shifts in the drivers of atmospheric chemistry warrant updates to mechanisms used in chemical transport models such as the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system. This work builds on the Regional Atmospheric Chemistry Mechanism version 2 (RACM2) and develops the Community Regional Atmospheric Chemistry Multiphase Mechanism (CRACMM) version 1.

Adsorption and Separation by Flexible MOFs.

Adv Mater

January 2025

Chair of Inorganic Chemistry I, Technische Universität Dresden, Bergstrasse 66, 01069, Dresden, Germany.

Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer unique opportunities due to their dynamic structural adaptability. This review explores the impact of flexibility on gas adsorption, highlighting key concepts for gas storage and separation. Specific examples demonstrate the principal effectiveness of flexible frameworks in enhancing gas uptake and working capacity.
