We aimed to evaluate the effect of blueberry extract and microparticles (MP) on sunscreen performance of multifunctional cosmetics. Octocrylene (OCT), benzophenone-3 (BENZ-3) and Tinosorb® M (MBBT) were employed as UV filters. An modeling was used to determine the UV filters concentrations to obtain high values of sunscreen protection factor (SPF) and UVA protection factor (UVA-PF). MBBT and blueberry-loaded microparticles (MP) and MBBT-loaded microparticles (MP) were prepared by spray-drying. OCT and BENZ-3 were added in the oil phase of cosmetics. Cosmetics A and B contained MP and MP, respectively, and cosmetic C was prepared without MP. Characterization, physicochemical stability and SPF was performed. UV filters distribution in human stratum corneum (SC) for each cosmetic was performed. Anti-oxidant activity of blueberry extract was evaluated. Sunscreen combination with the highest SPF was selected for formulations. Formulations A and B maintained their rheological behavior over time, unlike formulation C. SPFs for formulations A, B and C were 51.0, 33.7 and 49.6, respectively. We also developed and validated a method for analysis of the UV filters by HPLC/ PDA suitable for the assay. In Tape stripping test, MBBT showed SC distribution similar for all cosmetic formulations. OCT and BENZ-3 distribution to formulation A and C was also similar. Blueberry extract showed antioxidant capacity of 16.71 μg/mL equivalent to vitamin C. Cosmetics containing MPs presented better physical stability. Blueberry increased the photoprotective capacity of the formulations and added extra benefits due to its anti-oxidant and anti-aging properties.

With the urge to reduce the use of petroleum-based materials, the aim of this work is to valorize biowaste to develop smart films through a sustainable fabrication way. In this regard, choline chloride/urea (1:2) deep eutectic solvent (DES) at different concentrations (25, 40, 50 and 75 wt%) was used to dissolve cow horn, used as reinforcement agent in soy protein films. The film fabrication was carried out by compression molding, a fast and cost-effective.

Alcohol-induced health damage has become an increasing global public health concern. Anthocyanins exhibit essential biological activities, including antioxidation, anti-inflammation, and lipid reduction. This study investigates the rapid intervention effects and mechanisms of anthocyanin-rich blueberry extract in mitigating acute alcohol exposure in mice, aiming to uncover its novel nutritional roles.

Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Salerno, Via Giovanni Paolo II, 132, 84084 Fisciano, SA, Italy.

Hydrogel beads from rice milk and blueberry (BB) skins were fabricated as novel bio-based pH-sensitive devices. The encapsulation of BB into rice milk/alginate beads was achieved through a simple methodology. The colourimetric response of beads in different pH media was evaluated along with the proof of reusability, showing appropriate reversibility.

The main goal of this work was to develop bio-based and ecofriendly intelligent films as freshness indicators to monitor European hake () quality during storage by using a visual, non-destructive, and real-time technique. Locust bean gum (LBG)/κ-carrageenan (Car) films incorporating blueberry extract (BLE) or beetroot extract (BEE) were developed and their effectiveness to detect hake deterioration during 7 days of storage at 4 °C was evaluated. A visible color response from pink to blue was observed on the BLE films at the end of hake storage, which correlated with the hake deterioration profile, namely an increase in pH values (from 6.

Article Synopsis
  • Manned space missions, particularly those planned for Mars, are expected to last over 1000 days and will expose astronauts to challenges like radiation, altered gravity, and isolation, which highlights the need for effective space food systems.
  • This study systematically reviews the role of non-nutrient compounds, particularly flavonoids and polyphenols, in mitigating health issues related to radiation and low gravity during space missions.
  • Findings from 39 animal model studies indicate that polyphenols, especially from berry extracts and compounds like resveratrol, may help protect against cognitive decline and other physiological problems caused by radiation exposure in space.
