In this work, we designed and synthesized an aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active tetraphenylethene-decorated pseudo-trisialic acid (TPE3S) and validated its high affinity for Siglecs using microscale thermophoresis techniques. TPE3S was a unique binding-on fluorescent trivalent sialocluster which was successfully utilized for the visualization of Siglecs expressed on the surface of mammalian cells.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) are both promising cancer treatments to inhibit tumor cells by generating highly cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS). Herein, we report a novel tumor microenvironment (TME) stimulus-responsive water-soluble glycosylated photosensitizer (BT-TPE@Fe-Lac), which can serve as a high-efficiency antitumor agent by combining PDT and CDT, based on the coordination of Fe with lactosyl bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine and an AIE luminogen (benzothiazole-hydroxytetraphenylethene, BT-TPE). BT-TPE@Fe-Lac is stable under physiological conditions and selectively targets HepG2 cells asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGPR)-mediated endocytosis.

Novel sulfur reagents -vinylthio phthalimides (-VTPs) have been employed as modular reagents for vinylthiolation, enabling the construction of aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active tetraaryldivinyl sulfides (TADVSs) and diarylvinyl sulfides (DAVSs). Notably, TADVSs with sulfur insertion to ethene stators are reported as AIE luminogens (AIEgens) for the first time, and the corresponding photophysical properties and aggregated confirmation have been detailed for the demonstration of the AIE effect. A water-soluble TADVS with a quinolinium salt was prepared for cell imaging.

Lanthanide-based (Ln) luminescent materials are ideal candidates for use in fluorescence intracellular temperature sensing. However, it remains a great challenge to obtain a Ln-ratiometric fluorescence thermometer with high sensitivity and quantum yield in an aqueous environment. Herein, a cationic Eu-metallopolymer was synthesized via the coordination of Eu(TTA)·2HO with an AIE active amphipathic polymer backbone that contains APTMA ((3-acrylamidopropyl) trimethylammonium) and NIPAM (-isopropylacrylamide) units, which can self-assemble into nanoparticles in water solution with APTMA and NIPAM as the hydrophilic shell.

The emergence of resistance to conventional antimalarial treatments remains a major cause for concern. New drugs that target the distinct development stages of Plasmodium parasites are required to address this risk. Herein, water-soluble aggregation-induced emission active cyclometalated iridium(III) polypyridyl complexes (Ir1-Ir12) are developed for the elimination of malaria parasites.

Cellular pH homeostasis is essential for many physiological and pathological processes. pH monitoring is helpful for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders and diseases. Herein, we developed a ratiometric fluorescent pH probe (TCC) based on a coumarin derivative containing a highly active lactone ring.
