The VACTERL (vertebral defects, anal atresia, cardiac defects, tracheoesophageal fistula, renal anomalies, and limb abnormalities) association represents an enigmatic syndrome requiring further study. This report describes a full-term neonate born to a multiparous woman who was found, upon further examination, to have multiple congenital abnormalities, including a bicuspid aortic valve, patent foramen ovale, tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF), asymmetric crying facies, microphallus, and a single inguinal testis. The discussion explores environmental and genetic factors that may contribute to this association, as well as similar conditions, such as CHARGE (coloboma, heart defects, choanal atresia, growth retardation, genital abnormalities, and ear abnormalities) syndrome.

Gram-negative bacteria possess an asymmetric outer membrane, where the outer leaflet consists of LPSs and the inner leaflet comprises phospholipids. , an opportunistic milk-borne pathogen that causes severe neonatal meningitis and bacteremia, displays diverse lipopolysaccharide (LPS) structures. As a barrier of the bacterial cell, LPSs likely influenced resistance to environment stresses; however, there are no research reports on this aspect, hindering the development of novel bactericidal strategies overcoming the pathogen's resilience.

The primary risk factor for global disease burden is prolonged exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution, which results in health problems and death. However, the global burden of diarrheal diseases attributable to PM2.5 remains unclear.

A rare type of localized gigantism known as macrodystrophia lipomatosa is characterized by a disproportionate increase in fibroadipose tissues and a gradual overgrowth of all mesenchymal elements. The distribution in the lower extremities' plantar nerves and the upper extremity's median nerve is most commonly observed. This abnormality is congenital and typically manifests at birth or during the neonatal stage.

Blanding's turtles (Emydoidea blandingii) are a species of conservation concern throughout their natural range. Headstarting is a common chelonian conservation technique in which neonates are reared in managed-care settings before release, but health assessments are rarely incorporated. From 2020 to 2021 we assessed headstarted turtle health pre-release and 1 mo, 1 yr, and 2 yr after release using physical examination, hematology, plasma biochemistry, protein electrophoresis, and pathogen detection.
