Objectives: Ultrasonography is a noninvasive and safe modality for assessing body fat and is routinely performed in developed countries. Although pregnant women with obesity are at risk for many unfavorable outcomes, the relationship between abdominal fat distribution and metabolic syndrome (MS) is evident in some studies. Therefore, it is important to evaluate fat thickness in non-obese women and predict MS using fat thickness measurement.

Methods: A total of 132 pregnant women completed anthropometric and demographic questionnaires. All women were scanned for visceral fat thickness (VFT) via ultrasound at 11-14 weeks gestation. Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) were calculated at the first prenatal visit. MS components were also measured in the same weeks.

Results: MS was detected in seven (5.3%) women. There was a statistically significant difference between women with and without MS for weight, WC, anterior and posterior VFT, insulin, lipid profile (total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride), and systolic and diastolic blood pressure ( < 0.050). The optimal cut-off points determined for predicting MS disorder were an anterior VFT of 43.83 mm and a posterior VFT of 32.50 mm.

Conclusions: Fat thickness measurement in the first trimester is a good predictor for MS even in women with a normal BMI. Ultrasonography as a safe, simple, and cost-effective modality can be used to assess fat thickness besides the other screening evaluations in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Obesity is a major public health issue worldwide. Despite various approaches to weight loss, the most effective technique for reducing obesity, as well as diabetes and associated diseases, is bariatric surgery. Increasingly, young women without children are undergoing bariatric surgery, vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) being the most common procedure nowadays.

Background: Midfacial aging involves skeletal changes, muscle weakening, and fat redistribution, resulting in volume loss, skin sagging, and deepened nasolabial folds. High-Intensity Facial Electrical Stimulation (HIFES) combined with Radiofrequency (RF) is a novel non-invasive method to address these changes by enhancing muscle mass and remodeling subcutaneous tissue.

Objectives: To assess the efficacy of HIFES and Synchronized RF in improving midfacial aesthetics, specifically muscle thickness, skin displacement, and facial volume.

Purpose: This study aims to investigate how aspirin influences lumbar degeneration by analyzing the effect of aspirin on patients with low back pain (LBP) and concurrent atherosclerosis.

Methods: Using 1:1 nearest neighbor matching based on propensity score matching (PSM), 73 patients who regularly took aspirin were assigned to the aspirin group, while another 73 patients who did not take aspirin formed the control group. Radiographs were used to measure lumbar lordosis (LL) and intervertebral height index (IHI).

Article Synopsis
  • Obesity can lead to systemic inflammation and insulin resistance, increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and negatively impacting bone health, with unclear differences in effects between obesity and T2D.
  • The study aimed to investigate how hyperinsulinemic obesity and insulinopenic T2D affect bone structure and bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT), while also exploring the relationship with CRAMP expression and levels.
  • Mice fed a high-fat diet exhibited significant weight gain and bone deterioration, while those with insulinopenic T2D showed severe glucose intolerance and less BMAT expansion, indicating differing impacts on bone health between the conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • Discontinuous gullies, particularly spoon gullies on the Loess Plateau, are complex and have not been studied extensively, especially regarding their sediment yield processes.
  • Factorial analysis revealed that continuous gully density is the most significant factor influencing spoon gully distribution, contributing to 41.6% of their spatial arrangement, with other factors like NDVI and soil characteristics also playing roles.
  • The study identified seven distinct clusters of spoon gullies based on dominant factors and produced a susceptibility map for gully occurrence with high predictive accuracy, indicating intricate interactions among environmental factors.
