Prone Transpsoas Lumbar Interbody Fusion for Degenerative Disc Disease.

JBJS Essent Surg Tech

January 2025

Department of Neurosurgery, Center for Neuroscience and Spine, Virginia Mason Medical Center, Seattle, Washington.

Background: Prone transpsoas lumbar interbody fusion (PTP) is a newer technique to treat various spinal disc pathologies. PTP is a variation of lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) that is performed with the patient prone rather than in the lateral decubitus position. This approach offers similar benefits of lateral spinal surgery, which include less blood loss, shorter hospital stay, and quicker recovery compared with traditional open spine surgery.

1. Analysis of co-occurrence data with traditional indices has led to many problems such as sensitivity of the indices to prevalence and the same value representing either a strong positive or strong negative association across different datasets. In our recent study (Mainali et al 2022), we revealed the source of the problems that make the traditional indices fundamentally flawed and unreliable-namely that the indices in common use have no target of estimation quantifying degree of association in the non-null case-and we further developed a novel parameter of association, alpha, with complete formulation of the null distribution for estimating the mechanism of affinity.

Polarization Upends Convention: Halogen Bonding Propensities of Main Group Halides.

J Phys Chem A

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, Gottwald Center for the Sciences, University of Richmond, Richmond, Virginia 23173, United States.

The propensities for sigma hole bonding by halogen atoms bonded to central atoms below period 2 in the periodic table remain to be systematically examined. Using iodine as our reference halogen atom, a comprehensive analysis of the tendencies for halogen and other forms of significant sigma hole bonding by simple compounds of main group atoms from H to At is accomplished. An examination of the structure and bonding of complexes formed by those iodine-substituted main group compounds and sigma donating bases (ammonia and trimethylamine) is performed to probe the viability of halogen bonding by heavy main group RM-I compounds in particular, given the historic focus on period 2.

Ultrasound-assisted and Efficient Multicomponent Synthesis of 4H-Pyran Derivatives catalyzed by LiOH.H2O in Water.

Curr Org Synth

January 2025

Laboratoire de Chimie Organique (LR17ES08), Faculté des Sciences de Sfax, University of Sfax, Route de Soukra Km 3.5, BP 1171, 3000, Sfax, Tunisia.

Aim And Objective: It is well established that 4H-pyran derivatives hold a significant position in synthetic organic chemistry due to their diverse biological and pharmacological properties. This work aims to introduce a novel synthetic pathway for highly functionalized 4H-pyran derivatives, achieved through a 1,4-Michael addition followed by a cascade cyclization. This reaction is catalyzed by LiOH·H2O under ultrasonic irradiation in water, offering an efficient and environmentally friendly approach.
