Objective: To assess standardized protocol for fast track recovery after lung cancer surgery.

Material And Methods: There were 201 patients. Patients underwent VATS lung resection, VATS lobectomy and various open resections of lungs. Patients had either primary lung cancer or metastatic lung lesion with indications for surgical treatment. Management of patients was divided into 3 periods: preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative. The protocol of fast track recovery was developed considering literature data and own experience. Requirements of this protocol were applied in perioperative management.

Results: Application of the protocol was successful in all patients. Minimum number of complications (6%) and length of postoperative hospital-stay of 4 days were observed after VATS resection of lung. VATS lobectomy was followed by complication rate 25% and postoperative hospital-stay of 6 days. In the group of open resections these values were 29% and 7 days.

The respiratory tract is colonized with low-density microbial communities, which have been shown to impact human respiratory health through microbiota-host interactions. However, a lack of fast and cost-effective nucleic acid extraction method for low-microbial biomass samples hinders investigation of respiratory microbiota. Here, we performed a pilot study to assess the suitability of the NAxtra nucleic acid extraction protocol for profiling bacterial microbiota in respiratory samples.

Objective: Effective methods for establishing an aged animal model of diabetes and glycemic fluctuation have rarely been investigated. The aim of the study was to explore the feasibility of inducing glycemic fluctuation in aged Sprague-Dawley rats and to evaluate the corresponding changes in cognitive function.

Methods: Male rats aged 48 weeks were fed a high-fat and high-glucose diet and given streptozotocin intraperitoneally to establish a rat model of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Disrupted feeding and fasting cycles as well as chronic high fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity are associated with cardiovascular disease risk factors. We designed studies that determined whether two weeks of time-restricted feeding (TRF) intervention in mice fed a chronic HFD would reduce cardiovascular disease risk factors. Mice were fed a normal diet (ND; 10% fat) ad libitum or HFD (45% fat) for 18 weeks ad libitum to establish diet-induced obesity.

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a serious complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Despite improvements with fast-track treatment protocols, 0.5% of patients still develop a VTE within 90-days postoperatively.
