Objective: Research is often lacking in low-income countries to substantiate the regulation of antibiotics in poultry production. Nonregulation of antibiotics in food animal industries has implications for human health. This study was conducted to provide an understanding of farmers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding the use of antibiotics in poultry production in Grenada.
Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted in August-September, 2016, surveying 30 poultry farmers each having 500 or more chickens grown for commercial purposes.
Results: More than 1000 birds were kept on 18 (60.0%) farms. Antibiotics were used on the majority of farms (25, 83.3%). More than half of the respondents, 19 (63.3%), stated they were only somewhat aware of issues related to the use of antibiotics and the majority, 21 (70.0%), were also unable to define antimicrobial resistance. There was inconsistency in the farmers' knowledge about how and when to use antibiotics. There was also a high level of noncompliance with manufacturers' recommendations for use of antibiotics. The respondents were not aware of local programs to monitor antibiotic use or manage antibiotic resistance in the poultry industry.
Conclusion: Generally, the farmers' knowledge and practices were inconsistent with recommendations by the World Health Organization for antibiotic stewardship. While low-income countries, such as Grenada, are challenged with the lack of resources to undertake research and implement responsive actions, this research highlights the need for some immediate measures of remedy, such as education of farmers and monitoring procurement and use of antibiotics, to reduce risk to public health.

Introduction: Enterotoxic (ETEC) is the main pathogen that causes diarrhea, especially in young children. This disease can lead to substantial morbidity and mortality and is a major global health concern. Managing ETEC infections is challenging owing to the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance.

The primary objective of the study was to characterize concentrations and yields of lactoferrin (LF), insulin, and IGF-I in colostrum, transition milk (TM), and whole milk (WM) of multiparous (MP) and primiparous (PP) cows. A secondary objective was to determine associations between colostrum and TM components (fat, protein, lactose), IgG, and bioactive compounds (oligosaccharides, LF, insulin, IGF-I; defined as compounds present in micro quantities that stimulate physiological responses systemically or locally within the neonate). Holstein cows (10 MP and 10 PP) were assigned to the study at calving and colostrum was collected 5.

A total of 216 Beijing You-chickens (330 days old) were randomly divided into 2 groups. The control group (CON) was fed a corn-soybean-based diet, and the experimental group was fed a basal diet supplemented with 0.

This study investigated the effects of supplementing laying hen's diet with vitamin A (5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 IU/kg) and trace minerals (Zn, Mn, Cu, Fe and Se) in inorganic and organic form on the carotenoid content and deposition efficiency in egg yolk. Hen's diet consisted of two commercial dent corn hybrids (soft- and hard-type), which differed in their carotenoid profile. The feeding trial was conducted with 252 Lohmann Brown hens allocated in 84 cages that were randomly assigned to 12 dietary treatments (2 hybrids × 3 vitamin A levels × 2 trace mineral forms).

Salmonellosis is the second most important zoonosis in Europe, with consumption of contaminated broiler meat and its derivative products as an important source of infection. One of the many measures to prevent Salmonella contamination of poultry meat at the slaughterhouses is logistic slaughter, this means that per day the contaminated flocks are slaughtered after the Salmonella free flocks. However, this principle relies on a monitoring system at farm level that is prone to false negatives.
