RNA-binding proteins are essential for gene regulation and the spatial organization of cells. Here, we report that the yeast ribosome biogenesis factor Loc1p is an intrinsically disordered RNA-binding protein with eight repeating positively charged, unstructured nucleic acid binding (PUN) motifs. While a single of these previously undefined motifs stabilizes folded RNAs, multiple copies strongly cooperate to catalyze RNA folding.

Article Synopsis
  • Sepsis is a severe inflammatory condition that needs better treatment options, and proteomic research is key for finding drug targets associated with it.* -
  • Genetic data from over 35,000 individuals were used to conduct a series of analyses linking plasma proteins to sepsis, ultimately identifying 30 proteins with potential relevance.* -
  • Of these proteins, only 2 had strong associations with sepsis across various studies, highlighting the need for further research to validate their roles in the disease and its mortality.*

Technological advances and high-throughput bio-chemical assays are rapidly changing ways how we formulate and test biological hypotheses, and how we treat patients. Most complex diseases arise on a background of genetics, lifestyle and environment factors, and manifest themselves as a spectrum of symptoms. To fathom intricate biological processes and their changes from healthy to disease states, we need to systematically integrate and analyze multi-omics datasets, ontologies, and diverse annotations.
