Reticular chemistry has been an important guiding principle for the design of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). This approach utilizes discrete building units (molecules and clusters) that are connected through strong bonds into extended networks assisted by topological considerations. Although the simple design principle of connecting points and lines has proved successful, new design strategies are still needed to further explore the structures and functions of MOFs. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of two mixed-ligand MOFs, [(CH)NH][ZnO][Zn(TCPP)][BTB] (PCN-137) and [Zr(μ-O)(μ-OH)][TCPP][TBTB] (PCN-138) (BTB = 1,3,5-benzene(tris)benzoate, TBTB = 4,4',4″-(2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-triyl)tribenzoate, and TCPP = tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin) by the stacking of face-sharing Archimedean solids. In these two MOFs, high-symmetrical metal clusters serve as vertices, and tritopic or tetratopic carboxylate ligands function as triangular and square faces, leading to the formation of two kinds of Archimedean solids (rhombicuboctahedron and cuboctahedron). Furthermore, the ordered accumulation of Archimedean solids successfully gives rise to 3D structures through face-sharing, highlighting the polyhedron-based approach for the design and preparation of MOFs. In addition, PCN-138 was utilized as a heterogeneous catalyst toward CO photoreduction under visible-light irradiation. This structure shows high photocatalytic activity, which can be attributed to the coexistence of photosensitizing porphyrin fragments and Zr-oxo centers within the PCN-138 scaffold.

Wearable electronics are some of the most promising technologies with the potential to transform many aspects of human life such as smart healthcare and intelligent communication. The design of self-powered fabrics with the ability to efficiently harvest energy from the ambient environment would not only be beneficial for their integration with textiles, but would also reduce the environmental impact of wearable technologies by eliminating their need for disposable batteries. Herein, inspired by classical Archimedean spirals, we report a metastructured fiber fabricated by scrolling followed by cold drawing of a bilayer thin film of an MXene and a solid polymer electrolyte.

Clusters that can be experimentally precisely characterized and theoretically accurately calculated are essential to understanding the relationship between material structure and function. Here, we propose the concept of "supraclusters", which aim to connect "supramolecules" and "suprananoparticles" as well as reveal the unique assembly behavior of "supraclusters" with nanoparticle size at the molecular level. The implementation of supraclusters is full of challenges due to the difficulty in satisfying the ordered connectivity of clusters due to their abundant and dispersed hydrogen bonding sites.

Metal-organic polyhedra featuring non-Archimedean/Platonic architectures with multiple kinds of vertices have aroused great attention for their fascinating structures and properties but are yet challenging to achieve. Here, we report a combinatorial strategy to make such nonclassic polyhedral cages by combining kinetically labile metal ions with non-planar organic linkers instead of the usual only inert metal centers and planar ligands. This facilitates the synthesis of an enantiopure twisted tetra(3-pyridyl)-based TADDOL (TADDOL = tetraaryl-1,3-dioxolane-4,5-dimethanol) ligand () capable of binding Ni(II) ions to produce a regular convex cage, Ni, with two mixed metal/organic vertices and three rarely reported concave cages Ni, Ni, and Ni with three or four mixed vertices.

Metal-containing clusters have attracted increasing attention over the past 2-3 decades. This intense interest can be attributed to the fact that these discrete metal aggregates, whose atomically precise structures are resolved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), often possess intriguing geometrical features (high symmetry, aesthetically pleasing shapes and architectures) and fascinating physical properties, providing invaluable opportunities for the intersection of different disciplines including chemistry, physics, mathematical geometry and materials science. In this review, we attempt to reinterpret and connect these fascinating clusters from the perspective of Platonic and Archimedean solid characteristics, focusing on highly symmetrical and complex metal-containing (metal = Al, Ti, V, Mo, W, U, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, lanthanoids (Ln), and actinoids) high-nuclearity clusters, including metal-oxo/hydroxide/chalcogenide clusters and metal clusters (with metal-metal binding) protected by surface organic ligands, such as thiolate, phosphine, alkynyl, carbonyl and nitrogen/oxygen donor ligands.
