Metallothionein (MT) is a low-molecular-weight protein with a high metal binding capacity and plays a key role in organism adaptation to heavy metals. In this study, a metallothionein gene was successfully cloned and sequenced from Antarctic sea-ice yeast Rhodotorula mucilaginosa AN5. Nucleotide sequencing and analysis revealed that the gene had four exons interrupted by three introns. MTs complementary DNA (named as RmMT) had an open reading frame of 321 bp encoding a 106 amino acid protein with a predicted molecular weight of 10.3 kDa and pI of 8.49. The number of amino acids and distribution of cysteine residues indicated that RmMT was a novel family of fungal MTs. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis showed that RmMT expression was elevated under copper-induced stress. The RmMT gene was transferred into E. coli and the RmMT expressing bacteria showed improved tolerance to copper ion and increased accumulation of heavy metals, such as Cu , Pb , Zn , Cd , and Ag . Moreover, in vitro studies, purified recombinant RmMT demonstrated that it could be used as a good scavenger of superoxide anion, hydroxyl, and 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals. In summary, these results demonstrate that RmMT plays a key role in the tolerance and bioaccumulation of heavy metals.

The accumulation pattern of some inorganic pollutants in quarry sites around Ogun State was modeled using a Fuzzy comprehensive assessment (FCA). Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and naturally occurring radionuclides materials (NORMs) were assessed from soil samples collected from ten quarry sites in three districts (Odeda, Ajebo, and Ijebu Ode) in Ogun State. The gene GAD1 encodes a glutamate decarboxylase, which is a rate-limiting enzyme for the biosynthesis of endogenous γ-aminobutyrate acid (GABA), but a potential role of GAD1 in regulating cadmium (Cd) tolerance needs to be further elucidated in plants. The objective of this study was to investigate Cd tolerance of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) and transgenic yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) or Arabidopsis thaliana overexpressing AsGAD1. The Cd-tolerant creeping bentgrass cultivar LOFTSL-93 accumulated more endogenous GABA in relation to a significant upregulation of AsGAD1 in leaf and root than the Cd-sensitive W66569 in response to Cd stress.

Aim: To study the peculiarities of the ratio of the level of leptin and a number of toxic and essential chemical trace elements in biological environments in adolescent boys aged 13-14 years with obesity and delayed sexual development.
Materials And Methods: Three groups of adolescents aged 13-14 years were studied and formed: the main ones - with constitutional exogenous obesity of 1-2 degrees (1-20 boys without secondary signs of puberty; 2 - 24 boys with 2-4 stages of puberty according to Tanner) and comparisons (3 - 15 boys with normal body weight and without deviations in puberty).
