In the process of selecting and developing freshwater aquaculture species, yellow catfish (Tachysurus fulvidraco) have received widespread attention from Chinese farmers, fishery scientists and technologists. Achieving full artificial breeding of yellow catfish would help improve the quantity and quality of fingerlings supplied for large-scale production of this species. Temperature (T) and dissolved oxygen (DO) are the most important abiotic factors affecting the breeding efficiency of aquatic organisms. In this study, the synergistic effects of T and DO on fertilization rate (FR, %), hatching rate (HR, %) and deformity rate (DR, %) of hybrid yellow catfish (T. fulvidraco♀ × Pseudobagrus vachellii♂) were studied by central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology. A quadratic regression model for the effects of T and DO on FR, HR and DR was established, and the combination of T and DO was optimized. The first and second order effects of T and DO on FR and HR were significant under the conditions of this experiment (P < 0.05). The first and second order effects of T on DR were significant (P < 0.05) but there was no significant effect of DO on DR (P > 0.05). T and DO had significant interaction effects on FR (P < 0.05). High T and high DO environments reduced FR and HR of yellow catfish eggs and increased DR of the newly hatched larvae. The optimal combination of T and DO was 26.0 °C and 8.3 mgL, respectively. Maximum FR and HR coincided with minimal DR whose predicted values were 87.2%, 89.1% and 2.7%, respectively, with reliability of 0.979. Maintaining T and DO in the best combination will help to improve breeding efficiency and ensure production of the highest quantity and quality of fingerlings.

Hypoxia disrupts multiple physiological processes, including metabolism, immunity, and reproduction in teleosts. The brain plays a critical role in adapting to environmental changes, regulating the endocrine system, and controlling reproduction. The present study investigated the sex-specific cerebral responses to chronic hypoxia through an integrated analysis of the transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome of yellow catfish.

Different viruses are abundant in aquatic ecosystems. There has been limited research on the viral communities in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Yellow catfish (), an important economic fish that is widely distributed in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, was selected as the research object.

Despite being one of the better-surveyed regions in Brazil, the upper Rio Paraná basin still reveals relatively numerous large new species of fish. Here, we present a new uniquely colored species of the highly diverse, armored catfish genus Hypostomus. The new species was mostly found in the Rio Grande basin, plus a single record in the main channel of the Rio Paraná.

This study aimed to examine the impact of dietary carbohydrate to lipid (CHO/L) ratio on the growth, reproductive, and offspring performance of broodstock yellow catfish, and to elucidate the metabolic differences between mothers and offspring using lipidomics. Five isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets with varying CHO/L ratios (0.65, 1.

The IUCN classifies two-endemic fishes of the Western Ghats in Peninsular India: Nilgiri mystus Hemibagrus punctatus is critically endangered, and Yellow catfish Horabagrus brachysoma is vulnerable. These are threatened by habitat degradation, excess fishing, and dam construction. ICAR-NBFGR, the premier research organisation in India for fish conservation, aims to conserve these two species through captive propagation, stock identification, and stock-specific ranching programs.
