New porphyrin/4-oxoquinoline conjugates were synthesized from the Heck coupling reaction of a β-brominated porphyrin with 1-allyl-4-oxoquinoline derivatives, followed by demetallation and deprotection affording the promising photosensitizers 9a-e. Singlet oxygen studies have demonstrated that all the porphyrin/4-oxoquinoline conjugates 9a-e were capable of producing cytotoxic species and found to be excellent photosensitizing agents in the inactivation of S. aureus by the antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) protocol.

This study aimed to investigate the bactericidal effect of naringenin (NG), a plant-derived flavonoid, and its synergistic effect with mild heat (MH) treatment at 50 °C in peptone water (PW) and ready-to-drink cold brew coffee (RDC). Among various NG concentrations (1-20 mM), 10 mM NG resulted in the greatest inactivation for Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus. In RDC, NG + MH treatment resulted in a 5-8-log reduction in all pathogens after 10 min, except for S.

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) can survive inside nonprofessional phagocytes such as keratinocytes, enabling it to evade antibiotics and cause recurrent infections once treatment stops. New antibacterial strategies to eliminate intracellular, multidrug-resistant bacteria are needed.

Most photosensitizers have limited responsiveness to visible light, however, visible light is a light source with a wide range of wavelengths and the most common in daily life, and making full use of visible light can help to enhance the photodynamic antimicrobial properties of photosensitizers. To tackle this issue, this study confirmed that alizarin has a good absorption capacity for visible light by UV-DRS analysis. Theoretical calculations showed that alizarin might be excited through the charge transfer (CT) mechanism.
