Opsoclonus/flutter (O/F) is a rare disorder of the saccadic system. Previously, we modeled O/F that developed in a patient following abuse of anabolic steroids. That model, as in all models of the saccadic system, generates commands to make a change in eye position. Recently, we saw a patient who developed a unique form of opsoclonus following a concussion. The patient had postsaccadic ocular flutter in both directions of gaze, and opsoclonus during fixation and pursuit in the left hemifield. A new model of the saccadic system is needed to account for this gaze-position dependent O/F. We started with our prior model, which contains two key elements, mutual inhibition between inhibitory burst neurons on both sides and a prolonged reactivation time of the omnipause neurons (OPNs). We included new inputs to the OPNs from the nucleus prepositus hypoglossi and the frontal eye fields, which contain position-dependent neurons. This provides a mechanism for delaying OPN reactivation, and creating a gaze-position dependence. A simplified pursuit system was also added, the output of which inhibits the OPNs, providing a mechanism for gaze-dependence during pursuit. The rest of the model continues to generate a command to change eye position.

Differential Eye Movements and Greater Pupil Size During Mental Scene Construction in Autobiographical Recall.

Neuropsychologia

March 2025

School of Psychology, Sport and Sensory Science, Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK. Electronic address:

There is growing evidence supporting a role for eye movements during autobiographical recall, but their potential functionality remains unclear. We hypothesise that the oculomotor system facilitates the process of mental scene construction, in which complex scenes associated with an autobiographical event are generated and maintained during recall. To explore this, we examined spontaneous eye movements during retrieval of cued autobiographical memories.

Advanced wearable systems can accurately capture eye movement patterns, providing users with precise, comfortable, and reliable HCI solutions. In this paper, a Multichannel Eye-mask-based Wearable (MEW) system that offers a portable, high-sensitive eye movement recognition (EMR) and saccadic angle estimation (SAE) via the combination of multi-channel eye-mask electrodes, high-precision EOG acquisition system, and automatic EMR and SAE algorithms is proposed. The multi-channel eye-mask electrodes provide high-spatial-resolution EOG sensing, and the high-precision EOG acquisition system leverages an STM32 microcontroller and a BLE transceiver for wireless EOG data transmission.

It is an open question how prevented events are represented in the human cognitive system-are they represented like produced events or are they represented in a different format? Here, we propose that seemingly contradictory observations on this question can be unified by assuming different time courses for production and prevention actions. Evidence from two experiments in the anticipatory saccades paradigm supported this model. Specifically, our results suggest that prevented events might be represented like produced events during action selection and execution, whereas their representation dissolves rapidly during action monitoring.

Quantifying Oculomotor Fatigability for Early Detection of Myasthenia Gravis.

J Clin Neuromuscul Dis

March 2025

Department of Neurology, Jeonbuk National University Hospital, Jeonbuk National University School of Medicine, Jeonju, South Korea.

Objectives: The aim of this prospective, longitudinal study was to validate video-oculography (VOG) for early detection of myasthenia gravis (MG) in patients with clinical suspicion of MG but lacking confirmatory laboratory results.

Methods: Thirteen individuals suspected of having MG were studied using a 3-dimensional VOG system. Oculomotor fatigability, defined as the decrement (%) between the second and the last 5 average measures, was calculated.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease classified as neurodegenerative because it can be associated with the more or less progressive development of neurological symptoms and cognitive deficits. In recent years, various studies have started to investigate eye movements in relation to cognitive impairment in persons with MS by means of eye-tracking equipment. However, the high heterogeneity of the paradigms used in different studies, as well as the different methodologies included, makes it difficult to provide a complete and precise picture of this important research and clinical issue.
