AI Article Synopsis

  • This study used the implicit relational assessment procedure (IRAP) to investigate how power is symbolically represented in vertical space, showing that powerful words are associated with higher positions and powerless words with lower ones.
  • Participants responded to word pairs based on their vertical placement, revealing that pro-metaphor pairs (powerful-high, powerless-low) received significantly higher scores than anti-metaphor pairs.
  • The results confirm a spatial metaphor for power and demonstrate the effectiveness of IRAP compared to other testing methods, enhancing our understanding of how metaphors function in human perception.

Article Abstract

This experimental study explored the use of the implicit relational assessment procedure (IRAP) for understanding the vertical spatial metaphor of power. In the classic IRAP procedure, we formed four sets of stimuli based on the relationship between power words (powerful and powerless words) and vertical position on a computer screen (upper or lower) that were either pro-metaphor (i.e., powerful-high, powerless-low) or anti-metaphor (i.e., powerful-low, powerless-high). Participants were then asked to judge whether the words were consistent or inconsistent with the set of instructions given to them. We found that the scores of powerful words in an above vertical space and powerless words in a below vertical space were higher than zero. Furthermore, the scores of the pro-metaphor stimuli were significantly greater than were those of the anti-metaphor stimuli. Vertical spatial position metaphor of power concepts was verified again by IRAP. These findings suggest that there is an established spatial metaphor for power, which we explain using relational frame theory. It is the first study to our knowledge to explore this metaphor using the IRAP, which overcomes the limitations of paradigms such as the implicit association test, and provides a better understanding of the mechanism of the metaphor.

Historical and Contemporary Perspectives: Metaphorical Significance of Tooth Extraction in Lithographs and Postcards in the 19th and 20th Centuries in Their Specific Socio-Historical Context.

In historical illustrations and caricatures, the extraction of a tooth served as a powerful metaphor and threatening gesture that extended far beyond the medical context. This article examines the symbolic significance of this dental procedure and the extracted tooth as an expression of loss, disempowerment, and territorial dispossession. The comparison covers a wide range of visual representations from the French Revolution (1789-1799), the French July Revolution (1830), the Crimean War (1853-1856), the Austro-Prussian War (1866), the Franco-Prussian War (1870/71), to the First (1914-1918) and Second (1939-1945) World Wars and places them in their respective historical contexts.

The Microbiology-focused part of the initiative aims at educating inmates on some basic facts, in order to raise awareness about microorganisms and their impact on daily life. The outline of the talks, inspired by the International Initiative for Microbial Literacy, aims to encourage this collective to move from passive listeners into active participants, helping them understand that Earth is a microbial planet, and that their bodies harbour vast microbiomes that affect their health and social interactions.

The aim of this study is to analyze the transformation of aged women into yokai in Japanese literature, examining this metamorphosis from the perspectives of plastic surgery and gerontophobia. The Noh play "Adachigahara" explores the transformation of an outcast into a monstrous figure, highlighting how poverty, isolation, and aging can lead to a person's demonization, both metaphorically and literally. In "Rokujō no Miyasudokoro", Lady Rokujō's transformation into a vengeful spirit is tied to themes of aging, abandonment, and the societal devaluation of women as they grow older.

This article explores how time-related metaphors frame advanced cryopreservation technologies in environmental conservation. Cryopreservation "stops" or "freezes" biological time and "buys time" desperately needed to preserve species and ecosystems. We advance a framing of these technologies as logistical, highlighting how they create opportunities to shift materials, knowledge, and decision-making power through space and time.
