Published: June 2019

Background: The purpose of this study was to report the safety of perfluorobutane (Sonazoid) as a vascular-phase imaging agent in characterizing focal liver lesions (FLLs).

Materials And Methods: From May 2014 to April 2015, a total of 54 individuals who received Sonazoid contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) were enrolled at 5 hospitals of 4 medical centers. All individuals were included in safety evaluation. A prospective study to evaluate the adverse effect (AE) incidences after intravenous administration of Sonazoid.

Results: Sonazoid was well tolerated. Treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) representing AE were recorded for 13 (24.1%) patients. The most common AE was abdominal pain (9.3%), followed by heart rate irregularity (5.6%). The majority of these patients (69.2%) experienced TEAEs that were mild in intensity. Sonazoid causes no significant AEs after intravenous injection. The only noteworthy AEs are related to tolerable myalgia (3.7%), abdominal pain (1.9%), and headache (1.9%). None of the 54 patients showed serious adverse effects.

Conclusion: Sonazoid shows good safety and tolerance of intravenous use during CEUS of the liver for evaluation of FLLs.

BACKGROUND In living-donor liver transplantation, biliary complications are considered an Achilles' heel. Consequently, various attempts have been made to reduce their incidence, and multiple innovations in surgical techniques have been reported. We herein report a case involving an intraoperative ultrasound cholangiogram in the recipient's abdominal cavity after reperfusion of the graft.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are unseen, dangerous organic compounds that can cause major health disorders. PFASs have been categorized as persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT). This review provides knowledge about the PFASs present in junk food packaging materials, which can migrate into the food.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the molecular effects of legacy and replacement PFASs, specifically focusing on PFOS and its replacements, PFECHS and FBSA, in zebrafish embryos exposed to varying concentrations.
  • Results show that PFOS is the most toxic, indicating a significant risk associated with both legacy and newly introduced PFASs.
  • Findings suggest that the safety of replacement PFASs is questionable, prompting a need for reassessment of regulatory standards due to their emerging presence in the environment.

Article Synopsis
  • PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are harmful environmental pollutants that can accumulate in aquatic ecosystems and pose health risks to humans through fish consumption.
  • A study analyzed PFAS levels in 218 freshwater fish samples from Swiss lakes, focusing on six species, and used a specialized extraction method for accurate measurement.
  • Results showed widespread PFAS contamination, especially in certain fish species, with many exceeding EU safety limits, highlighting the urgent need for ongoing monitoring and regulations to reduce exposure risks.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) serve as the main destination of many wastes containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Here, we investigated the occurrence and transformation of PFAS and their transformation products (TPs) in wastewater treatment systems using high-resolution mass spectrometry-based target, suspect, and non-target screening approaches. The results revealed the presence of 896 PFAS and TPs in aqueous and sludge phases, of which 687 were assigned confidence levels 1-3 (46 PFAS and 641 TPs).
