Soda-ethanol pulps, prepared from a forestry residue pine sawdust, were treated according to high-consistency enzymatic fibrillation technology to manufacture nanocellulose. The obtained nanocellulose was characterized and used as ink for three-dimensional (3D) printing of various structures. It was also tested for its moisture sorption capacity and cytotoxicity, as preliminary tests for evaluating its suitability for wound dressing and similar applications. During the high-consistency enzymatic treatment it was found that only the treatment of the O-delignified pine pulp resulted in fibrillation into nano-scale. For 3D printing trials, the material needed to be fluidized further. By 3D printing, it was possible to fabricate various structures from the high-consistency enzymatic nanocellulose. However, the water sorption capacity of the structures was lower than previously seen with porous nanocellulose structures, indicating that further optimization of the material is needed. The material was found not to be cytotoxic, thus showing potential as material, e.g., for wound dressings and for printing tissue models.

The β-1,4 galactosylation catalyzed by β-1,4 galactosyltransferases (β4Gal-Ts) is not only closely associated with diverse physiological and pathological processes in humans but also widely applied in the -glycan modification of protein glycoengineering. The loop-closing process of β4Gal-Ts is an essential intermediate step intervening in the binding events of donor substrate (UDP-Gal/Mn) and acceptor substrate during its catalytic cycle, with a significant impact on the galactosylation activities. However, the molecular mechanisms in regulating loop-closing dynamics are not entirely clear.

Sulphite addition during steam pretreatment of softwoods under acidic, neutral and alkaline conditions was assessed to try to minimize lignin condensation. Although pretreatment under neutral/alkaline conditions resulted in effective lignin sulphonation, non-uniform size reduction was observed. In contrast, acidic sulphite steam treatment at 210 °C for 10 min resulted in homogenous particle size reduction and water-insoluble component that was 62% carbohydrate and 33% lignin.

A simple and effective approach for HPLC-MS/MS based multi-mycotoxin analysis in human urine samples was developed by application of dried urine spots (DUS) as alternative on-site sampling strategy. The newly developed method enables the detection and quantitation of 14 relevant mycotoxins and mycotoxin metabolites, including citrinin (CIT), dihydrocitrinone (DH-CIT), deoxynivalenol (DON), fumonisin B (FB), T-2 Toxin (T-2), HT-2 Toxin (HT-2), ochratoxin A (OTA), 2'R-ochratoxin A (2'R-OTA), ochratoxin α (OTα), tenuazonic acid and allo-tenuazonic acid (TeA + allo-TeA), zearalenone (ZEN), zearalanone (ZAN), α-zearalenol (α-ZEL), and β-zearalenol (β-ZEL). Besides the spotting procedure, sample preparation includes enzymatic cleavage of glucuronic acid conjugates and stable isotope dilution analysis.

Physiological processes, including those that disrupt oxidative balance, have been proposed as key to understanding fundamental life-history trade-offs. Yet, examination of changes in oxidative balance within wild animals across time, space and major life-history challenges remains uncommon. For example, migration presents substantial physiological challenges for individuals, and data on migratory individuals would provide crucial context for exposing the importance of relationships between oxidative balance and fitness outcomes.
