Salinaphthoquinones A-E (-) were isolated from a marine strain, recovered from sediments of the St. Peter and St. Paul Archipelago, Brazil. The structures of the compounds were elucidated using a combination of spectroscopic (NMR, IR, HRESIMS) data, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. A plausible biosynthetic pathway for - is proposed. Compounds to displayed moderate activity against and with MIC values of 125 to 16 μg/mL.

The large, shallow Lake Balaton (Hungary) has experienced rapid salinization since the 1970s. This study investigated the causes of salinization and aimed at predicting the effects of climate change. Monthly mass balance models for chloride and sodium were calibrated using water balance and water quality monitoring data (1976-2022) to analyze the effects of climate change (2022-2100) through ensemble modeling under the IPCC RCP 4.

Article Synopsis
  • The Watch List (WL) program in the EU focuses on detecting emerging pollutants in water that could harm human health and the environment, necessitating effective analysis methods.
  • This study introduces a fast, eco-friendly method to analyze 23 WL substances, including antibiotics, pesticides, and sunscreens, using direct aqueous injection and liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry.
  • The method demonstrated strong performance, with good recovery rates and quantification limits, earning a green score of 0.61, making it ideal for both screening and monitoring environmental water samples.

Urbanization has resulted in the widespread development of built-up areas, often without considering the local geology and geomorphology. To improve risk assessments related to landslides, it is essential to determine the physical and chemical properties of sediments. The aim of this study is to exemplify an already mobilized and reworked layer based on granulometric properties of the sediments and characterize the chemical and physical properties which have changed during or after the mass movement.

Stimulating Acidimicrobium sp. Strain A6 in iron-rich, acidic sediments from AFFF-impacted sites for PFAS defluorination.

Sci Total Environ

December 2024

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ 08544, United States of America. Electronic address:

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent and bioaccumulative contaminants that are widely used in industrial applications and consumer products and pose significant risks to ecosystems and human health. Acidimicrobium sp. Strain A6 (A6), which is common in acidic, and iron rich soils and sediments is capable of both anaerobic ammonium (NH) oxidation under iron reduction (Feammox) and defluorination of perfluorinated alkyl substances, such as perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs).
