Microparticle porosity is normally determined in bulk manner providing an ensemble average that hinders establishing the individual role of each microparticle. On the other hand, single particle characterization implies expensive technology. We propose to use ion concentration polarization to measure differences in mesoporosity at the single particle level. Ion concentration polarization occurs at the interface between an electrolyte and a porous particle when an electric field is applied. The extent of ion concentration polarization depends, among others, on the mesopore size and density. By using a fluorescence marker, we could measure differences in concentration polarization between particles with 3 and 13 nm average mesopore diameters. A qualitative model was developed in order to understand and interpret the phenomena. We believe that this inexpensive method could be used to measure differences in mesoporous particle materials such as catalysts.

Reaction and interaction dynamics of azobenzene-tethered DNA (photoresponsive DNA) with T7 RNA polymerase (T7RNAP) were studied after photoisomerization of azobenzene from the - to -forms using the transient grating (TG) and time-resolved fluorescence polarization techniques. Two types of photoresponsive DNA were examined: AzoPBD, tethered at the protein binding site, and AzoTATA, tethered at the unwinding site. A diffusion change was observed after photoexcitation of -AzoPBD within 1 ms, and this change is explained in terms of a structural change from a bent to an extended conformation upon the -to- photoisomerization.

Rapid warming in polar regions is causing large changes to ecosystems, including altering environmentally available mercury (Hg). Although subarctic freshwater systems have simple vertebrate communities, Hg in amphibians remains unexplored. We measured total Hg (THg) in wetland sediments and methylmercury (MeHg) in multiple life-stages (eggs to adults) of wood frogs (Rana sylvatica) and larval boreal chorus frogs (Pseudacris maculata) from up to 25 wetlands near Churchill, Manitoba (Canada), during the summers of 2018-2019.
