A checklist of the amphibians of Santa Teresa municipality, in southeastern Brazil is presented based on fieldwork, examination of specimens in collections, and a literature review. This new amphibian list of Santa Teresa includes 108 species, of which 106 (~98%) belong to Anura and two (~2%) to Gymnophiona. Hylidae was the most represented family with 47 species (43%). Compared to the previous amphibian lists for Santa Teresa, 14 species were added, 17 previously reported species were removed, and 13 species were re-identified based on recent taxonomic rearrangements. Of the 14 species added, 11 (79%) were first recorded during our fieldwork and specimen examination. It is also the first list of caecilians for Santa Teresa. This list suggests that Santa Teresa has 0.16 species per km (i.e., 108 species/683 km), one of the highest densities of amphibian species in the world at a regional scale. This richness represents 78% of the 136 anurans from Espírito Santo state and 10% of the 1,080 amphibians from Brazil. We highlight the need for long-term monitoring to understand population trends and develop effective conservation plans to safeguard this remarkable amphibian richness.

Veno-venal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation to support whole-lung lavage in a severe case of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis.

Rev Esp Anestesiol Reanim (Engl Ed)

We present the case of a 71-year-old woman with severe bilateral primary alveolar proteinosis admitted for bilateral whole lung lavage (WLL) with a double-lumen endotracheal tube. She had a cardiac arrest of respiratory origin during the procedure and recovered after one minute of advanced resuscitation. A second LLP was scheduled under respiratory support with veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO).

Delirium as a Risk Factor for Mortality in Critically Ill Patients With Cancer.

JCO Oncol Pract

Critical Care Medicine Service, Department of Anesthesiology, Pain & Critical Care Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY.

Purpose: Although delirium is known to negatively affect critically ill patients, little data exist on delirium in critically ill patients with cancer.

Methods: We analyzed 915 critically ill patients with cancer between January and December 2018. Delirium screening was performed using the Confusion Assessment Method for the intensive care unit (ICU), performed twice daily.

Background: To inform future research and practice, we aimed to investigate the outcomes of patients who received extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to different variants of SARS-CoV-2.

Methods: This retrospective study included consecutive adult patients with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection who received ECMO for ARDS in 21 experienced ECMO centres in eight European countries (Austria, Belgium, England, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Spain) between Jan 1, 2020, and Sept 30, 2021. We collected data on patient characteristics, clinical status, and management before and after the initiation of ECMO.

In-hospital and 6-month outcomes in patients with COVID-19 supported with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (EuroECMO-COVID): a multicentre, prospective observational study.

Lancet Respir Med

February 2023

2nd Department of Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine General Teaching Hospital, Prague, Czech Republic; 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates in-hospital mortality and post-discharge outcomes for patients with COVID-19 who received ECMO during the pandemic's first wave (March 1 - Sept 13, 2020).
  • Conducted by the European Extracorporeal Life Support Organization, it included 1215 patients from 21 countries and focused on various patient-related factors affecting survival rates.
  • Findings revealed a 50% in-hospital mortality rate, with factors like age, pre-ECMO complications, and delays in ECMO initiation linked to higher mortality.
