This is a report of 3 relatively rare clinical cases in which the absence of posterior elements of the axis was associated with basilar invagination and multiple other craniovertebral junction musculoskeletal and neural abnormalities. Atlantoaxial fixation resulted in remarkable clinical recovery in all 3 cases. C2-3 fixation was not done, and bone decompression was not done. On the basis of their experience, the authors conclude that atlantoaxial fixation is a satisfactory form of surgical treatment in patients having an association of basilar invagination with absent posterior elements of axis.

This study reports on an extremely rare case of non-traumatic atlantoaxial rotatory fixation (AARF) in an adult. Although there are numerous reports on traumatic AARF in adults, those on non-traumatic AARFs are limited. We present the case of a 25-year-old woman who developed neck pain with a limited range of motion (ROM) that began upon waking without any particular inducement.

The necessity of routinely placing closed suction wound drainage in spinal surgery has been questioned. This study aims to assess if closed suction wound drainage is necessary for posterior atlantoaxial fixation via intermuscular approach. The functional outcomes of these 40 patients who underwent posterior atlantoaxial fixation via intermuscular approach without drainage tube (Group A) were compared with that of a control group, which consisted of 68 randomly enrolled cases with posterior atlantoaxial fixation via intermuscular approach with drainage tube (Group B).

Background: This study is aimed to compare the differences in clinical outcomes between the crossed rod configuration and the parallel rod configuration applied in posterior occipitocervical and atlantoaxial fixations, and to assess the clinical applicability of crossed rods.
Methods: From January 2015 to December 2021, 21 patients with craniocervical junction disorders were treated surgically with the crossed rod technique (CR group). Meanwhile, 27 corresponding patients treated with the conventional parallel rod technique were included as control (PR group).

Background: The atlantoaxial vertebral model was established in order to compare the biomechanical properties of C2 pedicle and translaminar screws from the perspective of the screws themselves.
Methods: A finite element model of the screw-vertebrae was developed. The screw load-displacement ratios were analysed under up/down and left/right load conditions; the vertebral load-displacement ratios under flexion/posterior extension (FLX/EXT), left/right lateral bending (LLB/RLB), and left/right rotation (LAR/RAR) load conditions; the bone-screw interface stress values and screw load-displacement ratios under physiological load conditions; and the structural stress values of the screw-rod structure under front/back and left/right load conditions.

Here, we describe a rare case of atlantoaxial rotatory fixation (AARF) associated with incomplete Kawasaki disease. The case is of a healthy 4-year-old Japanese boy who had a high-grade fever, lymphadenopathy, and torticollis diagnosed with incomplete Kawasaki disease.
