New nickel-based complexes of 1,2-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene (dpp-bian) with BF counterion or halide co-ligands were synthesized in THF and MeCN. The nickel(I) complexes were obtained by using two approaches: 1) electrochemical reduction of the corresponding nickel(II) precursors; and 2) a chemical comproportionation reaction. The structural features and redox properties of these complexes were investigated by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and UV/Vis spectroscopy. The influence of temperature and solvent on the structure of the nickel(I) complexes was studied in detail, and an uncommon reversible solvent-induced monomer/dimer transformation was observed. In the case of the fluoride complex, the unpaired electron was found to be localized on the dpp-bian ligand, whereas all of the other nickel complexes contained neutral dpp-bian moieties.

ConspectusNickel pincer systems have recently attracted much attention for applications in various organometallic reactions and catalysis involving small molecule activation. Their exploration is in part motivated by the presence of nickel in natural systems for efficient catalysis. Among such systems, the nickel-containing metalloenzyme carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) efficiently and reversibly converts CO to CO at its active site.

Reaction of a molecular zinc-hydride [{(ArNCMe)CH}ZnH] (Ar=2,6-di-isopropylphenyl) with 0.5 equiv. of [Ni(CO)Cp] led to the isolation of a nickel-zinc hydride complex containing a bridging 3-centre,2-electron Ni-H-Zn interaction.

An S1-Approach to Cross-Coupling: Deoxygenative Arylation Facilitated by the β-Silicon Effect.

We report a dual metal-catalyzed method for the cross-coupling of unprotected alcohols by exploiting the β-Si effect. This deoxygenative Suzuki-Miyaura reaction tolerates a range of primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohol substrates along with diverse functional groups and heterocycles. Mechanistic experiments including KIE, VTNA, and Eyring analyses suggest the existence of a carbocation intermediate on the reaction pathway, consistent with a rare S1 pathway for the activation of an electrophile in cross-coupling reactions.

Nickel monocarbonyl species with Ni(I) and Ni(0) have been synthesized and fully characterized by employing an PNP-Ph pincer ligand having a -C(Ph)- bridge moiety to tether two aromatic rings. To see the effect of the bridge moiety, these complexes were structurally compared with the previously studied nickel complexes supported by PNP and PNP-Me ligands and methylation of the nickel carbonyl species was particularly investigated. Since a Ni(I)-CO species is known to be one of the key intermediates during the C-C coupling reaction to give an acetyl species, according to the paramagnetic mechanism of acetyl coenzyme A synthase (ACS), their reactivity toward MeI has been examined.

Phenoxyimine (FI)-nickel(II)(2-tolyl)(DMAP) compounds were synthesized and evaluated as precatalysts for the C(sp)-C(sp) Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling of (hetero)arylboronic acids with alkyl bromides. With 5 mol % of the optimal (MeFI)Ni(Aryl)(DMAP) precatalyst, the scope of the cross-coupling reaction was established and included a variety of (hetero)arylboronic acids and alkyl bromides (>50 examples, 33-97% yield). A β-hydride elimination-reductive elimination sequence from reaction with potassium isopropoxide base, yielding a potassium (FI)nickel(0)ate, was identified as a catalyst activation pathway that is responsible for halogen atom abstraction from the alkyl bromide.
