Ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) are fascinating functional materials that have a remnant and electrically invertible polarization. To date, typical FLCs have been mainly realized by molecular design such as the incorporation of chirality into a given molecular structure. Here, we report for the first time ferroelectricity induced by spin transition associated with a crystal - liquid crystal phase transition in achiral molecules. Iron(ii) metallomesogens incorporating alkyl chains of type [Fe(3C -bzimpy)](BF) ( = 8 (), 10 (), 12 (), 14 (), 16 () and 18 (); bzimpy = 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2'-yl)pyridine) that exhibit spin crossover (SCO) phenomena have been synthesized. Compounds and were each demonstrated to show SCO behaviour along with the occurrence of a phase transition between the crystalline (Cr) state and corresponding chiral smectic C (SmC*) state. The distortion of the coordination sphere in the high spin state is seen to trigger the generation of the SmC* state. The liquid crystalline compounds do not display ferroelectric behaviour in their Cr state but do exhibit ferroelectric hysteresis loops in their SmC* state. Ferroelectric switching was clearly confirmed by second harmonic generation (SHG) experiments involving the respective phases. These findings will undoubtedly lead to new strategies for the design of new FLCs based on metal-centred spin transitions.

Correcting mitochondrial loss mitigates NOTCH1-related aortopathy in mice.

Loss-of-function mutations in NOTCH1 were previously linked to thoracic aortopathy, a condition for which non-surgical treatment options are limited. Based on clinical proteome analysis, we hypothesized that mitochondrial fusion and biogenesis in aortic smooth muscle cells (SMCs) are crucial for regulating the progression of NOTCH1-related aortopathy. Here we demonstrate that SMC-specific Notch1 knockout mice develop aortic pathology, including stiffening, dilation and focal dissection.

β-Lactams are the most widely used antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial infections because of their proven track record of safety and efficacy. However, susceptibility to β-lactam antibiotics is continually eroded by resistance mechanisms. Emerging multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains possessing altered alleles (encoding PBP2) pose a global health emergency as they threaten the utility of ceftriaxone, the last remaining outpatient antibiotic.

Chromosome instability is a prevalent vulnerability of cancer cells that has yet to be fully exploited therapeutically. To identify genes uniquely essential to chromosomally unstable cells, we mined the Cancer Dependency Map for genes essential in tumor cells with high levels of copy number aberrations. We identify and validate KIF18A, a mitotic kinesin, as a vulnerability of chromosomally unstable cancer cells.

Article Synopsis
  • Aortic aneurysms and dissections (AAD) lead to over 10,000 deaths annually in the U.S., and currently, there are no effective medications to prevent them.
  • Researchers focused on ascending aortic aneurysms and dissections (AAAD) and explored the role of the MerTK receptor in endothelial cells as it relates to AAAD progression.
  • Utilizing advanced techniques like single-cell RNA sequencing and a specific mouse model lacking MerTK in endothelial cells, the study found that MerTK deficiency significantly increases the risk of AAAD by causing endothelial dysfunction and changes in smooth muscle cell behavior.

Introduction: Solidification/Stabilization techniques are commonly used for the containment and isolation of Pb-contaminated soil, but they cannot reduce the amount of contaminants. Freeze - thaw after stabilization may affect Pb's environmental behavior and increase the uncertainty of environmental risk.

Methods: experiments can simulate the bioavailability of heavy metals to the human body, accurately assessing their environmental health risks.
