Published: September 2019

A 12-year-old neutered female American cocker spaniel weighing 9.9 kg was presented for evaluation with a 2-day history of dyspnea and anorexia. Echocardiography revealed severe pulmonary hypertension (estimated systolic pulmonary arterial pressure, 93.4 mmHg) with right heart enlargement, pulmonary arterial dilation, and right ventricular dysfunction. The dilation of left heart and congenital cardiac shunt were not observed. Pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) was confirmed by computed tomographic angiography. After treatment with antiplatelet and anticoagulant, the clinical sign and the echocardiographic abnormality of right heart were improved. These echocardiographic findings are not specific for PTE, but it can be useful as a rule-in test for PTE when other causes of pulmonary hypertension are excluded and a monitor of therapeutic efficacy.

Besides its translational value, an improved understanding of dog longevity and mortality is necessary to guide health management decisions, breed selection, and improve dog welfare. In order to analyse the lifespan of dogs in Italy, identify the most common causes of death, and evaluate possible risk factors, anonymised medical records were collected from 9 veterinary teaching hospitals and 2 public health institutions. Data regarding breed, sex, neuter status, age, diagnosis, and mechanism of death were retrieved.

Vet Ophthalmol

November 2023

Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine and Research Institute for Veterinary Science, Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea.

Objective: To report the outcomes of sequential Ahmed valve implantation in two dogs with uncontrolled intraocular pressure (IOP) after primary Ahmed valve implantation.

Animals Studied: A 6-year-old castrated male American Cocker Spaniel (case 1) and a 12-year-old spayed female mixed-breed dog (case 2) presented with glaucoma management in the left eyes of both dogs.

Procedures: Primary Ahmed valve implantation was performed because of uncontrolled IOP despite antiglaucoma medications used in both dogs.

Article Synopsis
  • * Findings revealed a prevalence rate of 5.5%, with English bulldogs and American cocker spaniels being the most affected breeds; brachycephalic dogs had a significantly higher prevalence compared to non-brachycephalic dogs.
  • * Most cases were non-irritating, but corneal ulceration was noted in some affected dogs, particularly those showing significant symptoms, highlighting the need for awareness in specific breeds.

A 16-year-old intact female Miniature Dachshund (dog 1) and a 13-year-old intact female American Cocker Spaniel (dog 2) presented with a chief complaint of bleeding from a mammary gland tumour ulceration. Dog 1 was transferred to hospital from a local hospital in a haemorrhagic shock state with uncontrolled continuous bleeding. Thoracic radiographs revealed multiple nodular shadows suspected to be pulmonary metastasis.

Acute primary angle closure glaucoma is a potentially blinding ophthalmic emergency requiring prompt treatment to lower the elevated intraocular pressure in humans and dogs. The PACG in most of canine breeds is epidemiologically similar to humans with older and female patients overrepresented with the condition. The American Cocker Spaniel (ACS) is among the most common breeds observed with PACG development in dogs.
