Graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN), characterized with a suitable bandgap, has aroused great interest as a robust and efficient catalyst for solar energy utilization. Herein, we introduce a new strategy to fabricate a three-dimensional (3D) porous g-CN by a facile NaCl-assisted ball-milling strategy. The porous structure-induced advantages, such as a higher specific surface area, more efficient charge separation, and faster electron-transfer efficiency, enable the 3D porous g-CN to achieve impressive properties as a bifunctional catalyst for both photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). As a result, the 3D porous g-CN exhibits a hydrogen evolution rate of 598 μmol h g with an apparent quantum yield of 3.31% at 420 nm for photocatalytic H generation, which is much higher than that of the bulk g-CN. Simultaneously, the porous g-CN also presents an attractive OER performance with a low onset potential of 1.47 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode) in an alkaline electrolyte after rational cobalt-doping. Accordingly, the NaCl-assisted ball-milling strategy paves the way to the rational design of a controllable porous structure.

Metal-support interaction plays a critical role in determining the eventual catalytic activity of metals loaded on supporting substrates. This interaction can sometimes cause a significant drop in the metallic property of the loaded metal and, hence, a drop in catalytic activity in the reactions, especially in those for which low charge carrier transfer resistance is a necessary parameter. Therefore, there should be a case-by-case experimental or theoretical (or both) in-depth investigation to understand the role of support on each metal.

We present here a new approach for the synthesis of nitrogen-doped porous graphitic carbon (g-NC) with a stoichiometry of CHNO, using layered silicate as a hard sacrificial template. Autogenous exfoliation is achieved due to the heterostacking of 2D silicate and nitrogen-doped carbon layers. Micro- and meso-porosity is induced by melamine and cetyltrimethylammonium (CTMA).

The design and fabrication of eco-friendly and cost-effective (photo)electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key research goal for a proper management of water splitting to address the global energy crisis. In this work, we focus on the preparation of supported MnO/graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) OER (photo)electrocatalysts by means of a novel preparation strategy. The proposed route consists of the plasma enhanced-chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD) of MnO nanoarchitectures on porous Ni scaffolds, the anchoring of controllable g-CN amounts by an amenable electrophoretic deposition (EPD) process, and the ultimate thermal treatment in air.

Our density functional theory calculations show that silicon doping in g-CN (SiCN) can improve the electrochemical performance of g-CN as an anode of alkali metal-ion batteries and solve the problems of too high adsorption ability and migration energy barrier commonly found in porous carbon nitride. The stability of SiCN was verified by molecular dynamics simulations and phonon spectroscopy. Elastic constant calculations revealed that the Si doping in g-CN can improve its mechanical properties.
