Little is known about adolescent applications of the virtues such as honesty, responsibility and courage across different cultural contexts. Using the Adolescent Intermediate Concepts Measure we analyze samples of adolescents (ages 12 to 20; N = 9,112) from 5 contexts: North Macedonia, Mexico, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Across samples, adolescents provide evidence of developmental growth in the ability to apply virtue concepts as assessed by responses to dilemma-based situations. Within these trends, participants found it easier to identify action choices that reflect the virtue concepts as compared to justifications for possible actions. Additionally, participants were better able to identify appropriate applications of the virtues as compared to inappropriate ones. Gender differences favoring females were noted across samples. Overall, similarities across settings were more striking than differences suggesting that there is value in viewing the virtues as a normative component of character development across the adolescent years. The Divine in the Clinic: Assisted Reproduction and Religious Practice in Ghana and South Africa.

J Relig Health

January 2025

School of Social Sciences, 20 Chancellor's Walk, Monash University, Melbourne, VIC, 3880, Australia.

Drawing on studies with 40 informants in Ghana and 74 informants in South Africa, we explore spiritual interventions among staff and patients that accompany their use of assisted reproduction. These practices and expressions of faith reinforce staff and patients as moral subjects who have done everything possible to assist in the vagaries of assisted reproduction-another form of care to enable, complement, and enhance high-tech intervention. We consider the creation of sacred spaces in the clinics, the rituals that form part of IVF practice, and the dilemmas of translation when assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) travel to different cultural and religious contexts.

Background: Biobanks are vital for advancing medical research, and public participation is a crucial determinant of their success. This study uses a survey to assess the awareness, attitudes, and motivation of the public in China with regard to participating in biobanks.

Methods: We conducted an online survey that yielded 616 responses from participants with diverse demographic backgrounds.

Osteogenic differentiation is crucial in normal bone formation and pathological calcification, such as calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD). Understanding the proteomic and transcriptomic landscapes underlying this differentiation can unveil potential therapeutic targets for CAVD. In this study, we employed RNA sequencing transcriptomics and proteomics on a timsTOF Pro platform to explore the multiomics profiles of valve interstitial cells (VICs) and osteoblasts during osteogenic differentiation.

Microbial Sulfur Cycling Determinants and Implications for Environmental Impacts.

Chemosphere

January 2025

Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering, University of Toronto, 35 St. George Street, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 1A4, Canada. Electronic address:

Sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) play a vital role in the occurrence of sulfur oxidation intermediate (SOI) compounds often recalcitrant to currently available, abiotic treatment within metal mine tailings impoundments (TI). As inadvertent SOI discharge post-treatment can lead to the uncontrolled acidification of receiving environments, it becomes increasingly important to elucidate the environmental controls on SOB identities and sulfur cycling within these relatively unstudied systems. Here, results identified controlling factors on SOB community differentiation and associated metabolic pathway occurrence through integrated physicochemical, geochemical, and microbial field and experimental investigation across three summers (2016, 2017, 2021) in a stratified Northern Ontario base metal TI.

Investigating the delivery of PD-L1-targeted immunoliposomes in a dynamic cervical cancer-on-a-chip model.

J Control Release

January 2025

Precision Medicine in Oncology (PrMiO), and Nanomedicine Innovation Center Erasmus (NICE), Department of Pathology, Erasmus MC Cancer Institute, Erasmus MC, Dr. Molewaterplein 40, 3015 GD Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

The recent approval of pembrolizumab in recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer warrants further investigations into the usefulness of immunotherapies for more durable and less radical interventions. In this study, the targeting potential of anti-PD-L1-functionalized immunoliposomes was tested in a 3D in vitro cervical cancer-on-a-chip model. Immunolipsomes were synthesized and decorated externally with monovalent anti-PD-L1 Fab' fragments of commercially available atezolizumab.
