Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of nurse staffing, nurse education and work experience on patients' length of stay (LOS) in the Greek public hospitals.
Design/methodology/approach: A cross-sectional study, with retrospective administrative data, was implemented. From all seven Regional Health Authorities of Greece, 25 general surgical units in 17 public hospitals participated in the study.
Findings: All over the hospitals were studied, 32,287 patients ⩾17 years old and 203 nursing staff, who were working in the study units, were included in the analysis. According to the multivariate linear regression model, increased years of experience as a nurse (= -0.04, 95% CI= -0.06 to -0.02, =0.001) and increased percentage of registered nurse to the total nursing staff (= -1.18, CI= -1.88 to -0.47, =0.03) were associated with decreased patient LOS.
Originality/value: This was the first extended study in Greece, which explored the relationship between nurse staffing, nurse education, work experience and the LOS. The role that nurse staffing play together with its characteristics in the provision toward the quality healthcare services has already been recognized worldwide. The findings revealed the great shortage of nursing staff and the significant correlation between the work experience and educational level to patients' LOS.

Purpose: Diversion or theft of controlled substances is a recognized problem affecting healthcare systems globally. The purpose of this study was to develop a framework for identifying and characterizing system factors leading to vulnerabilities for diversion within hospitals.
Methods: We applied a qualitative framework method, which involved 1) compiling a list of critical diversion vulnerabilities through observations and proactive risk analyses in the inpatient pharmacy, emergency department and intensive care unit of two Canadian hospitals; 2) coding the vulnerabilities into deductively and inductively derived themes and subthemes; and 3) building a conceptual framework.
Objectives: To characterize the 1) types of material goods (non-medical items) offered in pediatric residency continuity clinics, 2) consistency of good availability, 3) funding sources used to support supply, 4) whether goods are provided in response to social needs screening, and 5) common challenges with provision. To assess the extent to which provision of goods varied by clinic size and proportion of publicly insured patients.
Methods: Faculty and staff members from clinics in the Academic Pediatric Association's Continuity Research Network (APA CORNET) completed an online survey about material goods provided in their clinic in the preceding 12 months.

Ongoing challenges in the provision of care, driven by growing care complexity and nursing shortages, prompt us to reconsider the basis for efficient division of nursing labour. In organising nursing work, traditionally the focus has been on identifying nursing tasks that can be delegated to other less expensive and less highly educated staff, in order to make best use of scarce resources. We argue that nursing care activities are connected and intertwined.

Background: The pandemic response required the large-scale redeployment of nurses to support the care of patients with COVID-19. Surveys of staff and analysis of staff feedback indicated that the frequent redeployment of intensive care unit (ICU) registered nurses (RNs) led to dissatisfaction and contributed to voluntary reductions in hours and increased intentions to resign. Whilst much is understood about the redeployment of non-ICU RNs into ICUs to support patient care during periods of high demand, less is known about ICU RNs' experiences of being redeployed to general wards.
