Identifying the number of unreported cases in SIR epidemic models.

Math Med Biol

Mathematics Department, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, USA.

Published: May 2020

An SIR epidemic model is analysed with respect to the identification of its parameters and initial values, based upon reported case data from public health sources. The objective of the analysis is to understand the relationship of unreported cases to reported cases. In many epidemic diseases the reported cases are a small fraction of the unreported cases. This fraction can be estimated by the identification of parameters for the model from reported case data. The analysis is applied to the Hong Kong seasonal influenza epidemic in New York City in 1968-1969.

The striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) is a rarely spotted carnivore in India listed as Near Threatened (red list) by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2014. Hyena is considered as scavenger but also executes rare opportunistic attacks on humans. In India, reported cases of hyena attack on humans are very rare, because of remote locations of these attacks majority of which go unreported to higher medical centres.

Cases: Two patients with spontaneous loss of thumb interphalangeal joint extension were referred after history, electrodiagnostic, and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings were felt to demonstrate a posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) palsy. Subsequent physical examination and additional directed studies suggested an alternative explanation: rupture of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon, subsequently confirmed at surgery. An extensor indicis proprius to EPL transfer restored thumb function.

Successful Diagnosis of Sengers Syndrome Using a Comprehensive Genomic Analysis.

Mol Genet Genomic Med

January 2025

Diagnostics and Therapeutics of Intractable Diseases, Intractable Disease Research Center, Graduate School of Medicine, Juntendo University, Tokyo, Japan.

Background: Sengers syndrome is an autosomal recessive mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome characterized by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, congenital cataracts, skeletal myopathy, exercise intolerance, and lactic acidosis. Dysfunction of acylglycerol kinase (AGK) is responsible for the disease, and several AGK gene variants have been reported.

Methods: We employed a comprehensive genomic analysis approach, including whole-genome sequencing and RNA sequencing, combined with various bioinformatics tools.

Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the frequency of pathogenic copy number variants (CNVs) classified as incidental findings (IFs) in prenatal diagnosis and to develop consensus recommendations for standardizing their reporting across six centers within the Catalan public health system (XIGENICS network).

Method: A retrospective review of 4219 consecutive prenatal microarrays performed within the network from 2018 to 2023 was conducted, including all referral reasons. To develop consensus recommendations, several discussion meetings were held along with an extensive review of the existing literature.
