Aim Of The Study: In this study, antibacterial and antibiofilm potential of sulphated polysaccharides (SPs) extracted from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (Cr) was evaluated against Neisseria mucosa, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus sp. and Bacillus subtilis.
Methods And Results: Antibacterial potential of Cr-SPs was evaluated by agar-cup diffusion, time-kill and colony-forming ability (CFU), minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentration assays. Antibiofilm potential was evaluated by biofilm inhibition, eradication, extracellular-DNA, metabolic activity and microscopy assays. Cr-SPs at 0·5 mg ml showed 34·52, 48·6, 66·1 and 55·6% reduced CFU in B. subtilis, Streptococcus, N. mucosa and E. coli respectively. Minimum inhibitory concentration of Cr-SPs was as low as 480 μg ml for Streptococcus, N. mucosa and 420 μg ml for B. subtilis and E. coli. At 1 mg ml , Cr-SPs showed 50% biofilm inhibition, whereas 4-8 mg ml showed 100% inhibition. Cr-SPs also effectively dissolved preformed biofilms. Dose-dependent reduction in extracellular DNA revealed that Cr-SPs interacts with the extra polymeric substance of the biofilm and destroys them. Light microscopy reconfirmed the above results.
Conclusion: Cr-SPs not only inhibited biofilm formation but also effectively dissolved preformed-biofilms.
Significance And Impact Of The Study: The current study showed the promising potential of Cr-SPs as antibiofilm agents. Further validation will help in developing Cr-SPs as natural antibiotics against biofilm-causing bacteria.

Lipophilic derivatives of vitamin C, known as ascorbyl-6-O-alkanoates (ASCn), have been mainly developed for use in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and the food industry as antioxidant additives. These derivatives are of biotechnological interest due to their antioxidant properties, amphiphilic behavior, capacity to self-organize into nano- and micro-structures, anionic nature, and low cost of synthesis. In this review, we will focus on the commercial amphiphile, 6-O-palmitoyl L-ascorbic acid (ASC16), and the shorter acyl chains derivatives, such as 6-O-myristoyl (ASC14) and 6-O-lauroyl L-ascorbic acid (ASC12).

The escalating prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has led to a serious global public health problem; therefore, there is an urgent need for the development of structurally innovative antibacterial agents. In our study, different series of tetra-substituted thiophene derivatives were designed and synthesized by multi-component reactions (MCRs) in moderate to excellent yields. Some of the designed final compounds were synthesized by both microwave assisted method and traditional synthesis.

Periodontal disease stands the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. While scaling and root planning is considered the "gold standard" treatment, it is often insufficient in efficiently eliminating anaerobic bacteria from deep periodontal pockets. In this work, an antibiotic-free and photo-curing hyaluronic acid-Janus (H-Janus) antibacterial pack was developed to inhibit the growth and colonization of residual bacteria within the pockets for reducing the recurrence of periodontitis.
