Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is one of the most prevalent types of lung cancer and continues to have an ominous five year survival rate. Considerable work has been accomplished in analyzing the viability of the treatments offered to NSCLC patients; however, while many of these treatments have performed better over populations of diagnosed NSCLC patients, a specific treatment may not be the most effective therapy for a given patient. Coupling both patient similarity metrics using the Gower similarity metric and prior treatment knowledge, we were able to demonstrate how patient analytics can complement clinical efforts in recommending the next best treatment. Our retrospective and exploratory results indicate that a majority of patients are not recommended the best surviving therapy once they require a new therapy. This investigation lays the groundwork for treatment recommendation using analytics, but more investigation is required to analyze patient outcomes beyond survival.

Architectural metamaterials that span different length scales and are either self-similar or dissimilar to one another make up hierarchical lattices. Comparing hierarchical lattices to traditional ones reveals that they offer superior and customizable properties, which allows for a wide variety of material property manipulation and optimization. Each computer network can be represented as a graph, where nodes alternate as vertices and links are edges.

Training a machine learning system to evaluate any type of facial deformity is impeded by the scarcity of large datasets of high-quality, ethics board-approved patient images. We have built a deep learning-based cleft lip generator called CleftGAN designed to produce an almost unlimited number of high-fidelity facsimiles of cleft lip facial images with wide variation. A transfer learning protocol testing different versions of StyleGAN as the base model was undertaken.

At Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), thiopurine metabolites are measured by high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV). Whole blood samples are lysed and subjected to hydrolysis with derivatisation of 6MMP before HPLC-UV detection at 304nm for the 6MMP-derivative and 342nm for 6TG.

In the pregenomic era, scientists were puzzled by the observation that haploid genome size (the C-value) did not correlate well with organismal complexity. This phenomenon, called the "C-value paradox," is mostly explained by the fact that protein-coding genes occupy only a small fraction of eukaryotic genomes. When the first genome sequences became available, scientists were even more surprised by the fact that the number of genes (G-value) was also a poor predictor of complexity, which gave rise to the "G-value paradox.
