We establish analogues of the mean value theorem and Taylor's theorem for fractional differential operators defined using a Mittag-Leffler kernel. We formulate a new model for the fractional Boussinesq equation by using this new Taylor series expansion.

A software tool for applying Bayes' theorem in medical diagnostics.

BMC Med Inform Decis Mak

December 2024

Hellenic Complex Systems Laboratory, Kostis Palamas 21, 66131, Drama, Greece.

Background: In medical diagnostics, estimating post-test or posterior probabilities for disease, positive and negative predictive values, and their associated uncertainty is essential for patient care.

Objective: The aim of this work is to introduce a software tool developed in the Wolfram Language for the parametric estimation, visualization, and comparison of Bayesian diagnostic measures and their uncertainty.

Methods: This tool employs Bayes' theorem to estimate positive and negative predictive values and posterior probabilities for the presence and absence of a disease.

DNA methylation-based predictors of metabolic traits in Scottish and Singaporean cohorts.

Am J Hum Genet

January 2025

Centre for Genomic and Experimental Medicine, Institute of Genetics and Cancer, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK.

Exploring the molecular correlates of metabolic health measures may identify their shared and unique biological processes and pathways. Molecular proxies of these traits may also provide a more objective approach to their measurement. Here, DNA methylation (DNAm) data were used in epigenome-wide association studies (EWASs) and for training epigenetic scores (EpiScores) of six metabolic traits: body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, waist-hip ratio, and blood-based measures of glucose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and total cholesterol in >17,000 volunteers from the Generation Scotland (GS) cohort.

Parameter Estimation and Identifiability in Kinetic Flux Profiling Models of Metabolism.

Bull Math Biol

November 2024

Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, University of Iowa, 51 Newton Road, Iowa City, IA, 52242, USA.

Metabolic fluxes are the rates of life-sustaining chemical reactions within a cell and metabolites are the components. Determining the changes in these fluxes is crucial to understanding diseases with metabolic causes and consequences. Kinetic flux profiling (KFP) is a method for estimating flux that utilizes data from isotope tracing experiments.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of enoxaparin, a medication for preventing blood clots, in critically ill children, focusing on differences in response based on age, particularly between older children and infants.
  • It consists of two simultaneous clinical trials: one for older children aged 1-17 years, and another for infants under 1 year, with specific dosing protocols for each group.
  • The trials are set in multiple pediatric intensive care units across the U.S., using methods like randomization, ultrasonography, and blood analysis to assess outcomes and monitor safety.

Background: Diabetes can be detected at the primary health-care level, and effective treatments lower the risk of complications. There are insufficient data on the coverage of treatment for diabetes and how it has changed. We estimated trends from 1990 to 2022 in diabetes prevalence and treatment for 200 countries and territories.
