This study investigated the separate and combined effects of skin cooling and cold fluid ingestion on the alleviation of heat strain when wearing protective firefighting clothing at an air temperature of 30°C with 50%RH. A vest with the dual functions of cooling and providing sports drink supply (1.2% body mass) was developed. Eight males participated in the following four conditions: control [CON], drinking only [DO], cooling only [CO], and both cooling and drinking [CD]. The results showed that rectal (T), mean skin temperature (T) and heart rate (HR) during recovery were lower for CD than for CON (p<0.05), while no significant differences between the four conditions were found during exercise. CO significantly reduced mean T and HR and improved thermal sensation, whereas DO was effective for relieving thirst and lowering HR in recovery. In summary, the combined effect of skin cooling and fluid ingestion was synergistically manifested in T, T and thermal sensation in recovery.Practitioner Summary: The present results provide data on a novel vest that contributes to alleviating firefighters' heat strain. Because a cooling vest after melting may be a burden for firefighters, this study indicates a practical way to reduce the additional weight load of the vest by drinking the melted fluid of the cooling packs.

Objective: This study investigated the effects of mass and vertical center-of-mass position of combat items attached to a tactical vest, as well as marksmanship posture on rifle marksmanship performance, postural sway, and perceived workload during a simulated rifle shooting task.

Background: A tactical vest serves as a load carriage system in addition to providing body protection. Its design, particularly the mass and vertical position of attached combat items, may impact postural control during rifle shooting and thus marksmanship performance.

Aerobic exercise reduces circulating ionized Ca (iCa) and increases parathyroid hormone (PTH), but the cause and consequences on Ca handling are unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of strenuous exercise on Ca kinetics using dual stable Ca isotopes. Twenty-one healthy women (26.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how carrying an additional 16 kg load affects ankle movements during landing in military training, using advanced imaging techniques to capture precise joint movements.* -
  • Fourteen healthy male participants performed single-leg jumps from a height of 40 cm, and kinematic data were collected with and without the added trunk load to compare the effects.* -
  • Results showed that the added load significantly increased the range of motion and changes in the subtalar joint during landing, along with an increase in vertical ground reaction force.*

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at two types of CT scans, UHR-CTA and HPS-CTA, to see which one is better for planning heart valve surgery in patients with serious heart issues.
  • It involved 64 older patients and found that HPS-CTA used less radiation but UHR-CTA provided clearer images of the heart.
  • Both scans gave similar measurements for sizing the new heart valves, but when the images from HPS-CTA were not as good, doctors sometimes suggested different valve sizes.

Unlabelled: Physical Therapists affiliated with Intrepid Spirit Centers evaluate and treat Active Duty Service Members (ADSM) who have duty-limiting post-concussion symptoms to improve the ability to perform challenging tasks associated with military service. The Complex Assessment of Military Performance (CAMP) is a test battery that more closely approximates the occupational demands of ADSM without specific adherence to a particular branch of service or military occupational specialty. Subtasks were developed with military collaborators to include high level skills that all service members must be able to perform such as reacting quickly, maintaining visual stability while moving and changing positions, and scanning for, noting, and/or remembering operationally relevant information under conditions of physical exertion.
