Pesticides are used to increase crop yields and preserve quality by protecting crops against pests; however, their overuse can adversely affect human health and the environment. Herein, we report the development of a multi-pesticide screening method using optimized QuEChERS coupled with liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight (QTOF) mass spectrometry for the analysis of 13 pesticides in wheat flour. Mass accuracies with errors of less than 2.4 ppm were obtained for all analysed pesticides, and the method provided satisfactory recovery and linearity. Repeatabilities of 0.3-12.7% and reproducibilities of 2.5-15.2% were observed in full-scan TOF mode. The performance of the developed full-scan TOF method was compared to that obtained in high-resolution multiple reaction monitoring (MRM-HR) mode. The limits of quantification for the full-scan TOF and MRM-HR modes ranged from 2 to 10, and 3 to 9 μg kg, respectively. The two quantification methods exhibited high sensitivities (limit of detections: 1-3 μg kg in full-scan TOF, and 1-3 μg kg for MRM-HR mode). No pesticide residues were detected when the developed method was applied to 22 real wheat flour samples.

Advancing structural elucidation of conjugation drug metabolites in metabolite profiling with novel electron-activated dissociation.

Rationale: This study focuses on the advantage of using the novel electron-activated dissociation (EAD) technology on the QTOF system for structural elucidation of conjugation metabolites. In drug metabolite identification, conceptual "boxes" are generally used to represent potential sites of modifications, which are proposed based on MS/MS data. Electron-activated dissociation (EAD) provides unique fragmentation patterns, potentially allowing for more precise localization of the metabolic modification sites compared to CID, particularly for conjugations.

Organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) have emerged as good alternatives to brominated flame retardants, the use of which is globally restricted. In this study, a screening method based on QuEChERS-gas chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-Q-TOF/MS) was established for the determination of 21 OPFRs in rice. First, full scan (scanning range, 50-450) was performed with a mixed standard solution of the 21 OPFRs (0.

Article Synopsis
  • - Restrictions on phthalates have led to the increased use of alternative plasticizers (APs) like organophosphate and adipate, which can easily migrate out of plastic products and contaminate food, raising environmental and health concerns.
  • - Toxicological studies suggest that APs could be harmful to human health, impacting endocrine functions and potentially causing neurotoxicity and other adverse effects, emphasizing the need to assess their risks in food products like sesame oil.
  • - Advanced detection methods, such as gas chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-Q-TOF/MS), offer high resolution and sensitivity for analyzing low levels of APs in complex samples, making them effective for monitoring contaminants in food products. *

A comprehensive strategy for effective identification of total constituents in Chinese patent medicine has been advanced applying full scan-preferred parent ions capture-static and active exclusion (FS-PIC-SAE) acquisition coupled with intelligent deep-learning supported mass defect filter (MDF) process, with Naoxintong capsule (NXT) as a case. Online comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2DLC) coupled with Q-TOF-MS/MS system was established for obtaining the excellent separation and detection performance of total components, which could exhibit excellent peak capacity with 1052 and orthogonality with 0.69.

Article Synopsis
  • Synthetic cannabinoids are increasingly controlled in China, but their continuously changing structures make them difficult to detect using standard methods, prompting a need for new screening techniques.
  • The study utilized ultra high performance liquid chromatography tandem triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UPLC-QqQ-MS) to screen for synthetic cannabinoids by optimizing collision energies of four key characteristic fragments and confirming findings with more advanced mass spectrometry methods (UPLC-QTOF-MS).
  • The research successfully identified a novel synthetic cannabinoid, 4 F-ABUTINACA, and discovered multiple synthetic cannabinoids and by-products in various samples, highlighting the effectiveness of the integrated screening approach.
