Microsurgical anatomy of the subcallosal artery.

Published: September 2019

Background And Purpose: The subcallosal artery [SCA, a branch of the anterior communicating artery (ACoA)] is not well described in the literature. However, the memory disorders that can occur after surgical repair of ruptured ACoA aneurysms might be related to infarction of the SCA. The objective of the present study was to perform a thorough anatomical assessment of the SCA.

Methods: The study was carried out over a 6-month period in a University Hospital's anatomy laboratory, using brains extracted from human cadavers. The brains were injected with colored neoprene latex and dissected to study the SCA's origin, path, termination, diameter, length, and vascularized territories.

Results: 21 cadaveric specimens were studied. The mean ± standard deviation diameter and length of the SCA were 0.83 ± 0.57 mm and 38.14 ± 25.11 mm, respectively. The predominantly vascularized territories were the paraterminal gyrus (100%), the parolfactory gyrus (78.95%), the rostrum (84.21%) and genu (78.95%) of the corpus callosum, the lamina terminalis (78.95%), the anterior commissure (63.16%), the anterior cingulate gyrus (47.37%), and the fornix (26.32%). When the SCA supplied the fornix and the anterior cingulate gyrus, it was significantly longer and broader (p < 0.05).

Conclusion: Anatomic knowledge of the SCA is crucial-especially for the treatment of ACoA aneurysms.

Rapidly Trading Down Depression's 3 Pillars to 5HT3-Receptors Through ECT or Psilocybin?

Psychiatr Danub

September 2024

BipoSuisse - Psychiatrische Praxis, Vereinsweg 11, CH 3012 Berne, Switzerland,

Article Synopsis
  • - Depression can potentially be alleviated instantly using electrotherapies or psychedelics like psilocybin, shifting focus from traditional antidepressant approaches that overlook the importance of the serotonin channel 5HT3.
  • - The text introduces three main factors, or "pillars," contributing to depression: mitochondria's influence via 5HT3, neurobiological "pushback" effects shown in brain imaging, and psychological elements like shame and conflict, possibly linked to brain-ganglia interactions.
  • - It suggests that psychedelics may help combat neurobiological issues linked to depression by interacting with certain serotonin channels, and draws parallels between the evolution of psilocybin in fungi and its potential anti-depressive

Acute amnestic syndrome in fornix lesions: a systematic review of reported cases with a focus on differential diagnosis.

Front Neurol

January 2024

Department of Emergency Neurology and Stroke Unit, IRCCS Fondazione Mondino, Pavia, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute amnestic syndrome is a rare neurological condition often confused with other disorders like Wernicke-Korsakoff and transient global amnesia, with structural lesions in the fornix being a less common cause.
  • A systematic review of the literature identified 55 cases, mostly due to vascular causes, with 74% linked specifically to acute ischemic strokes, leading to mainly anterograde amnesia.
  • Diagnosis is difficult due to overlapping symptoms with other conditions, and many patients continue to experience memory deficits even after initial treatment.

Multimodal imaging measures in the prediction of clinical response to deep brain stimulation for refractory depression: A machine learning approach.

World J Biol Psychiatry

March 2024

Department of Radiology, Clinical Neurosciences, Hotchkiss Brain Institute, Cumming school of medicine, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Objectives: This study compared machine learning models using unimodal imaging measures and combined multi-modal imaging measures for deep brain stimulation (DBS) outcome prediction in treatment resistant depression (TRD).

Methods: Regional brain glucose metabolism (CMRGlu), cerebral blood flow (CBF), and grey matter volume (GMV) were measured at baseline using 18F-fluorodeoxy glucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET), arterial spin labelling (ASL) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and T1-weighted MRI, respectively, in 19 patients with TRD receiving subcallosal cingulate (SCC)-DBS. Responders ( = 9) were defined by a 50% reduction in HAMD-17 at 6 months from the baseline.

Purpose: An anterior communicating artery is a common location for both ruptured and unruptured intracranial aneurysms, and microsurgery is sometimes necessary for their successful treatment. However, postoperative infarction should be considered during clipping due to the complex surrounding structures of anterior communicating artery aneurysms. This study aimed to evaluate the risk factors of postoperative infarction after surgical clipping of unruptured anterior communicating artery aneurysms and its clinical outcomes.

Background: Probiotics are suggested to improve depressive symptoms via the microbiota-gut-brain axis. We have recently shown a beneficial clinical effect of probiotic supplementation in patients with depression. Their underlying neural mechanisms remain unknown.
