Aqueous chemical solution deposition (CSD) of lead-free ferroelectric KNaNbO (KNN) thin films has a great potential for cost-effective and environmentally friendly components in microelectronics. Phase purity of KNN is, however, a persistent challenge due to the volatility of alkali metal oxides, usually countered by using excess alkali metals in the precursor solutions. Here, we report on the development of two different aqueous precursor solutions for CSD of KNN films, and we demonstrate that the decomposition process during thermal processing of the films is of detrimental importance for promoting nucleation of KNN and suppressing the formation of secondary phases. Based on thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy of films as well as powders prepared from the solutions, it was revealed that the decomposition temperature can be controlled by chemistry resulting in phase pure KNN films. A columnar microstructure with out-of-plane texturing was observed in the phase pure KNN films, demonstrating that the microstructure is directly coupled to the thermal processing of the films.

This work presents air-coupled piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers (pMUTs) with high sound pressure level (SPL) under low-driving voltages by utilizing sputtered potassium sodium niobate KNaNbO (KNN) films. A prototype single KNN pMUT has been tested to show a resonant frequency at 106.3 kHz under 4 V with outstanding characteristics: (1) a large vibration amplitude of 3.

In this work, a bilayer lead-free perovskite ferroelectric structure was fabricated comprising a highly polar BiFeO (BFO) bottom layer and a less polar (KNa)NbO (KNN) top layer. The BFO sublayer, deposited via radio frequency magnetron sputtering without postgrowth annealing, not only exhibited enhanced crystallinity but also promoted superior microstructural properties in the sol-gel derived KNN overlayer, thereby ensuring excellent intrinsic electrical properties. Compared to the poorly crystallized single-layer KNN films directly synthesized on LNO-buffered (100)-Si substrate, the KNN layer in the bilayer structure demonstrated a strong (100) texture, along with a dense, homogeneous, fine-grained morphology.

Article Synopsis
  • Over the last 20 years, there have been continuous advancements in the room temperature piezoelectric properties of KNN-based ceramics, but they still face issues with temperature stability compared to lead-based options.
  • Researchers developed multilayer composite ceramics using thick films with different phase transition temperatures to improve temperature stability without sacrificing piezoelectric performance.
  • The new composites showed impressive piezoelectric metrics and stability over a wide temperature range, which is attributed to factors like reduced fluctuations between layers and an enduring crystal orientation that enhances performance.

Improvements in the polarization of environmentally-friendly perovskite ferroelectrics have proved to be a challenging task in order to replace the toxic Pb-based counterparts. In contrast to common methods by complex chemical composition designs, we have formed Mn-inlaid antiphase boundaries in Mn-doped (K,Na)NbO thin films using pulsed laser deposition method. Here, we observed that mono- or bi-atomic layer of Mn has been identified to inlay along the antiphase boundaries to balance the charges originated from the deficiency of alkali ions and to induce the strain in the KNN films.

Trypanosomiasis, a significant health concern in South America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, requires active surveys to effectively control the disease. To address this, we have developed a hybrid model that combines deep metric learning (DML) and image retrieval. This model is proficient at identifying Trypanosoma species in microscopic images of thin-blood film examinations.
