Plants growing in high densities experience a reduced red (R) to far-red (FR) light ratio and shade-intolerant species respond with accelerated elongation growth to reach the top of the canopy: the shade avoidance syndrome (SAS). FR-enriched light inactivates phytochrome photoreceptors, which results in subsequent action of several plant hormones regulating growth. SAS is adaptive for shade-intolerant plants, but is suppressed in shade-tolerant plant species. Inspired by a previously published transcriptome analysis, we use two species of the genus here to study the involvement of auxin, brassinosteroids (BRs), and gibberellins (GAs) in supplemental FR-induced elongation growth. , a shade-avoiding species, strongly induces auxin and gibberellin levels, but not BR, in elongating petioles. We show that, in this species, FR light perception, hormone synthesis, and growth are local and restricted to the petiole, and not the leaf lamina. Using chemical hormone inhibitors, we confirm the essential role of auxin and GAs in supplemental FR-induced elongation growth. Shade-tolerant does not display the change in hormone levels upon FR light enrichment, resulting in the lack of a shade avoidance response.

Ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L.) is a halophyte and an inducible CAM plant. Ice plant seedlings display moderate salt tolerance, with root growth unaffected by 200 mM NaCl treatments, though hypocotyl elongation is hindered in salt-stressed etiolated seedlings.

Unlabelled: Mycobacteria, including pathogens like , exhibit unique growth patterns and cell envelope structures that challenge our understanding of bacterial physiology. This study sheds light on FhaA, a conserved protein in , revealing its pivotal role in coordinating cell envelope biogenesis and asymmetric growth. The elucidation of the FhaA interactome in living mycobacterial cells reveals its participation in the protein network orchestrating cell envelope biogenesis and cell elongation/division.

Fluoroquinolone antibiotic enrofloxacin (ENR) is frequently detected in agricultural environments. The hormesis and detrimental effects of ENR on crops have been extensively observed. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these crops' responses to ENR remain limited.

Hypusination of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A (eIF5A) is essential for its role in translation elongation and termination. Although the function of hypusinated eIF5A (eIF5A) in cellular proliferation is well-characterized, the role of its unhypusinated form (eIF5A) remains unclear. We hypothesized that eIF5A exerts independent, negative effects on cellular replication and metabolism, distinct from the loss of eIF5A.

Clinical Relevance: When selecting an intervention for myopia management, parental inquiries centre around the comparative efficacy of orthokeratology versus myopic defocus spectacle lenses. This prompts an intriguing investigation into the nuanced differences between these two treatment methods.
Background: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of spectacle lenses with highly aspherical lenslets (HAL) versus orthokeratology (Ortho-k) in controlling axial length elongation.
