AI Article Synopsis

  • Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a major wheat disease that significantly affects the economy, with a key genetic marker identified for resistance.
  • Researchers developed a Kompetitive Allele Specific PCR (KASP) marker, named PFT_KASP, which effectively detects FHB resistance in various wheat breeding lines.
  • The study revealed discrepancies between the new KASP marker and existing markers, highlighting PFT_KASP as a precise tool for breeding resistant wheat varieties.

Article Abstract

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a devastating wheat disease with a significant economic impact. is the most important large effect and stable QTL for FHB resistance. A pore-forming toxin-like () gene was recently identified as an underlying gene for resistance. In this study, we developed and validated a -based Kompetitive allele specific PCR (KASP) marker for . The KASP marker, PFT_KASP, was used to screen 298 diverse wheat breeding lines and cultivars. The KASP clustering results were compared with gel-based gene specific markers and the widely used linked STS marker, UMN10. Eight disagreements were found between PFT_KASP and UMN10 assays among the tested lines. Based on the genotyping and sequencing of genes in the region, these genotypes were found to be common with a previously characterized susceptible haplotype. Therefore, our results indicate that PFT_KASP is a perfect diagnostic marker for and would be a valuable tool for introgression and pyramiding of FHB resistance in wheat cultivars.

Background: Grain number (GN) is one of the key yield contributing factors in modern wheat (Triticum aestivum) varieties. Fruiting efficiency (FE) is a key trait for increasing GN by making more spike assimilates available to reproductive structures. Thousand grain weight (TGW) is also an important component of grain yield.

Background: Identifying markers or genes crucial for growth traits in Zhongwei goats is pivotal for breeding. Pinpointing genetic factors linked to body size gain enhances breeding efficiency and economic value. In this study, we used the MGISEQ-T7 platform to re-sequence 240 Zhongwei goats (133 male; 107 female) belonging to 5 metrics of growth traits at different growth stages (40 days and 6 months, here in after referred to as 40d and 6 m), namely, Body Weight (BW), Body Height (BH), Body Length (BL), Chest Circumference (CC), Tube Circumference (TC) were examined.

Unlabelled: Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) of wheat ( L.) is one of the complex traits that result in rainfall-dependent reductions in grain production and quality worldwide. Breeding new varieties and germplasm with PHS resistance is of great importance to reduce this problem.
