Anisotropic photonic materials with linear dichroism are crucial components in many sensing, imaging, and communication applications. Such materials play an important role as polarizers, filters, and waveplates in photonic devices and circuits. Conventional crystalline materials with optical anisotropy typically show unidirectional linear dichroism over a broad wavelength range. The linear dichroism conversion phenomenon has not been observed in crystalline materials. The investigation of the unique linear dichroism conversion phenomenon in quasi-1D hexagonal perovskite chalcogenide BaTiS is reported. This material shows a record level of optical anisotropy within the visible wavelength range. In contrast to conventional anisotropic optical materials, the linear dichroism polarity in BaTiS makes an orthogonal change at an optical wavelength corresponding to the photon energy of 1.78 eV. First-principles calculations reveal that this anomalous linear dichroism conversion behavior originates from the different selection rules of the parallel energy bands in the BaTiS material. Wavelength-dependent polarized Raman spectroscopy further confirms this phenomenon. Such a material, with linear dichroism conversion properties, could facilitate the sensing and control of the energy and polarization of light, and lead to novel photonic devices such as polarization-wavelength selective detectors and lasers for multispectral imaging, sensing, and optical communication applications.

Photonic crystal-based aptasensors for viral proteins detection offer the advantage of producing visible readouts. However, they usually suffer from limited sensitivity and high non-specific background noise. A significant contributing factor to these issues is the use of fixed-conformation aptamers in these sensors.

Design of a graphene-based chiral trifunctional tunable terahertz metasurface.

Phys Chem Chem Phys

January 2025

College of Mechanics and Engineering Science, Hohai University, Nanjing, 211100, China.

Driven by the pressing demand for integration and miniaturization within the terahertz (THz) spectrum, this research introduces an innovative approach to construct chiral structures using dichroism as the target function. This initiative aims to tackle the prevalent issues of single-functionality, narrow application scope, and intricate design in conventional metasurfaces. The proposed multifunctional tunable metasurface employs a graphene-metal hybrid structure to address the critical constraints found in existing designs.

Circular differential scattering (CDS) spectroscopy has been developed as a powerful method for the characterization of the optical activity of individual plasmonic nanostructures and their complexes with chiral molecules. However, standard measurement setups often result in artifacts that have long raised concerns on the interpretation of spectral data. In fact, the detection limit of CDS setups is constrained by the high level of artifacts, to ±10%.

Lead (Pb) ions give an imminent danger since they have been known to cause persistent damage to humans, plants, and animals, even at low concentrations, and cysteine (Cys) elevated levels are critical indicators for many diseases. Therefore, their detection is critical in pharmaceutical and environmental samples. This study tailored an innovative fluorescence switch off-on assay to detect Pb and Cys based on the amplification of G-quadruplex (G-4) to N-methylmesoporphyrin IX (NMM).
