Do all teeth show the same wear traces when processing the same diet, or do the wear traces of the same diet differ between species, maybe due to differences in tooth morphology or chewing physiology? Questions like this one can be tested using appropriate biological and statistical methods. Without such tests, claiming that a certain proxy of tooth wear represents a "taxon-free" signal remains a hypothesis.

Peculiar Effect of Water on Tribological Properties of Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent.

Langmuir

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Solid Lubrication, Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lanzhou 730000, China.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have emerged as promising green liquid lubricants for solving tribological problems due to their economic and excellent physicochemical and lubrication properties. However, a trace amount of water would affect their structure, physicochemical properties, and tribological properties. The effect of water on the tribological properties of DES is still unclear and needs further investigate.

Hematological Response to Particle Debris Generated During Wear-Corrosion Processes of CoCr Surfaces Modified with Graphene Oxide and Hyaluronic Acid for Joint Prostheses.

Various surface modifications to increase the lifespan of cobalt-chromium (CoCr) joint prostheses are being studied to reduce the wear rate in bone joint applications. One recently proposed modification involves depositing graphene oxide functionalized with hyaluronic acid (a compound present in joints) on CoCr surfaces, which can act as a solid lubricant. This paper analyzes the biological alterations caused by wear-corrosion phenomena that occur in joints, both from the perspective of the worn surface (in vitro model) and the particles generated during the wear processes (in vivo model).

This study investigates arsenic (As) species, sources, and transformation patterns in deposited coal mine dust (DCMD) from three coal mines-QSY, MHJ, and SCC-in the Ningdong Coalfield, China. While the parent coals have low As levels, the DCMD shows significant enrichment, with concentrations 137 to 345 times higher. The mineral composition of the DCMD reflects that of the parent coals but includes secondary minerals such as gypsum and various trace elements, including As.

Article Synopsis
  • - Giant cell interstitial pneumonia (GIP) is a serious lung disease related to exposure to hard metals like tungsten, typically found in industrial tools, but it can also occur without clear exposure history.
  • - In a study of five patients with GIP, researchers used advanced techniques to identify metal dust and asbestos in lung samples, finding trace amounts of tungsten and asbestos fibers associated with severe lung damage.
  • - The results suggest that other factors beyond hard metal exposure might contribute to GIP's development, hinting at a complex immune mechanism that could explain its recurrence in lung transplants.
