Blotter papers laced with lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) have been abused traditionally for their hallucinogenic properties. In recent years, new psychedelic phenethylamines such as 2,5-dimethoxyphenethylamines (2C) and their N-benzylhydroxy (25-NBOH) and N-2-methoxybenzyl derivatives (25-NBOMe) have emerged in the illicit drugs market. Traditionally, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is regarded as the gold standard for illicit drugs analysis. However, with the emergence of new psychoactive substances (NPS) which are thermally labile (such as the 25-NBOH drugs which undergo thermal degradation to their respective 2C drugs), alternative non-thermal techniques have to be developed in order to prevent misidentification. In this study, a single, targeted, non-thermal analytical method using the liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to simultaneously identify these new phenethylamines and their derivatives was developed and validated. Twelve phenethylamines and their derivatives, as well as LSD were simultaneously analysed using the LC-MS/MS in a multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) detection mode. The method developed was validated and applied for the analysis of phenethylamines and their derivatives commonly found in seized exhibits such as blotter papers and Ecstasy tablets.

Drug use represents a prevalent and multifaceted societal problem, with profound implications for public health, social welfare, and economic stability. To circumvent strict international drug control regulations, there is a growing trend in the development and market introduction of novel psychoactive substances (NPS), encompassing a wide range of compounds with psychoactive properties. This includes, among other classes of drugs, the phenethylamines.

In the management of pregnancy, ritodrine has been used to prevent preterm birth, and magnesium sulfate (MgSO) has been used to prevent preterm labor and preeclampsia. Neonates born to mothers receiving these medications occasionally show an increase in serum potassium concentration. Recently, an elevated risk of neonatal hyperkalemia has been reported, particularly when ritodrine and MgSO are co-administered; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.

Background: Presentations and outcomes of acute myocardial infarction (MI) differ between women and men, with the worst outcomes being reported in younger women. Mental stress induced ischemia and sympathetic activation have been suggested to play a prominent role in the pathogenesis of MI in younger women, however, the impact of sex hormones on these parameters remains unknown.
Methods: The effect of sex hormones and age on myocardial infarct size and myocardial sympathetic activity (MSA) was assessed in male and female, as well as young (4-6 months) and aged (20-22 months) FVB/N mice (n = 106, 60 gonadectomized and 46 sham-operated animals) who underwent in vivo [C]meta-hydroxyephedrine ([C]mHED) positron emission tomography (PET) and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging 24 h after a 30 min myocardial ischemic injury.

Background: The ionic mechanism underlying Brugada syndrome (BrS) arises from an imbalance in transient outward current flow between the epicardium and endocardium. Previous studies report that artemisinin, originally derived from a Chinese herb for antimalarial use, inhibits the Ito current in canines. In a prior study, we showed the antiarrhythmic effects of artemisinin in BrS wedge preparation models.

Objective: The senescence of smooth muscle is one of the independent risk factors in atherosclerosis progression in which the vascular inflammation plays an important role on vascular dysfunction. This study is designed to explore the novel vascular aging biomarkers and screen the potential molecular interventional targets through bioinformatic analysis.
Results: Transcriptional analysis was conducted based on the GSE16487 open access database, which included 15 human vascular tissue samples from two groups: young group (≤ 60 years old, n = 8) and aged group (≥ 75 years old, n = 7).
