To evaluate dairy intake patterns in older adults across Europe. We conducted cross-sectional analysis using data from the fourth wave (2011/2012) of the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) database. Prevalence rates regarding the number of weekly servings of dairy in individuals ≥50 years old were calculated for 16 European countries. The overall prevalence rate of daily dairy product intake in Europe was 66.95% (CI95%: 66.28-67.63%). Global prevalence in men was 63.35% (CI95%:62.37-64.35%) and in women 69.80% (CI95%:68.86-70.71%). Among men, this type of intake was highest in Denmark (84.89% [CI95%: 79.11-90.66%]) and lowest in Poland (26.15% [CI95%: 22.71-29.58%]). Among women, the highest prevalence was found in Spain (89.51% [CI95%: 85.16-93.86%]) and the lowest in Poland (31.33% [CI95%: 27.05-35.61%]). The overall prevalence rate of dairy product intake less than once a week was 3.99% (CI95%: 3.83-4.16%). In terms of gender, men in Hungary (11.02% [CI95%: 9.16-12.89%]) and women in Slovenia (8.76% [CI95%: 7.26-10.25%]) had the lowest such intake. Dairy intake is very heterogeneous across Europe, with overall intake levels lower than recommended. Differences were also observed between genders, with a lower intake in men, and with age, with the intake lower in older individuals.

Interactions of human milk oligosaccharides with the immune system.

Front Immunol

January 2025

School of Biochemistry and Immunology, Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland.

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are abundant, diverse and complex sugars present in human breast milk. HMOs are well-characterized barriers to microbial infection and by modulating the human microbiome they are also thought to be nutritionally beneficial to the infant. The structural variety of over 200 HMOs, including neutral, fucosylated and sialylated forms, allows them to interact with the immune system in various ways.

Periparturient dairy cows experience metabolic adaptations to prepare for increased nutrient requirements of the fetus and the onset of lactation. Adaptations include increased peripheral tissue insulin resistance, which can be evaluated experimentally using intravenous glucose tolerance tests (IVGTT). The objective of this study was to determine if prepartum skeletal muscle reserves and supplementation of branched-chain volatile fatty acids (BCVFA) in the prepartum period affected blood glucose, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), and insulin concentrations 2 wk prepartum and 1 wk postpartum utilizing an IVGTT.

Although 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP; Bovaer10) has been proven to reduce enteric methane (CH) by ∼30% in indoor systems of dairying when the additive is mixed throughout TMR and partial mixed ration (PMR) diets, there has been limited research to date on the CH abatement potential of 3-NOP when mixed within a diet based on perennial ryegrass silage only and fed to pregnant nonlactating dairy cows. To investigate the effect of 3-NOP supplementation on enteric CH emissions of pregnant nonlactating dairy cows, a 6-wk study was undertaken in which treatment cows were supplemented with 3-NOP mixed within grass silage, whereas control cows were offered grass silage without additive supplementation. Enteric CH, hydrogen (H), and carbon dioxide (CO) were measured using a GreenFeed machine.

The effects of poor fluid milk experience on store choice and customer loyalty in online and in-store retail channels.

Dairy producers work extensively to ensure quality, but there is limited information on how poor experience with milk affects consumer choice. This study uses an online survey of 725 US consumers to assess how a poor experience with milk affects purchase behavior in different channels. We examine the relationship between product experience and purchase behavior and find that a poor experience is associated with a greater likelihood of switching stores and with lower net promoter scores, suggesting that having high quality milk may improve customer loyalty.

The aim of this study was to determine and compare the diagnostic accuracies of two commercial pregnancy-associated glycoprotein tests, Alertys OnFarm Pregnancy Test (AOPT) and Alertys Milk Pregnancy Test (AMPT), for early pregnancy diagnosis in dairy cattle. Holstein cows (n = 124) were used in the study. Whole blood samples were collected from the jugular vein 28 days after fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI).
