The high prevalence of chronic diseases and use of multiple medications identified in Primary Health Care (PHC) suggest the need for the implementation of Comprehensive Medication Management (CMM) services. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical results of CMM services in a Brazilian PHC setting. A quasi-experimental study was performed with patients followed-up for two years ( = 90). Factors associated with the detection of four drug therapy problems (DTP) or more in the initial assessment were evaluated (univariate and multivariate analyses), as well as the clinical impact observed in laboratory parameters (HbA1c, Blood Pressure, LDL- and HDL-covariance analysis). A predominance of women (61.1%), a mean age of 65.5 years, and a prevalence of polypharmacy (87.8%)-use of five or more drugs-were observed. A total of 441 DTP was identified, 252 required interventions with the prescriber, 67.9% of which were accepted and 59.6% were solved. The main DTP were 'non-adherence' (28.1%), 'need for additional drug therapy' (21.8%), and 'low dose' (19.5%). Hypertension was positively associated with the identification of four DTP or more. A statistically significant reduction was detected in all assessed laboratory parameters ( < 0.05). CMM services contributed to the resolution of DTP and improved clinical outcomes.

Setting up a global SARS-CoV-2 surveillance system requires an understanding of how virus isolation and propagation practices, use of animal or human sera, and different neutralisation assay platforms influence assessment of SARS-CoV-2 antigenicity. In this study, with the contribution of 15 independent laboratories across all WHO regions, we carried out a controlled analysis of neutralisation assay platforms using the first WHO International Standard for antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (source: NIBSC). Live virus isolates (source: WHO BioHub or individual labs) or spike plasmids (individual labs) for pseudovirus production were used to perform neutralisation assays using the same serum panels.

Purpose: To quantitate regional changes in the outer choroidal vessels in patients with geographic atrophy (GA) in AMD and to correlate with a histopathological donor sample.

Methods: We analyzed 35 participants with GA for in vivo analysis and 1 participant with subject for histopathological analysis. Participants underwent three structural optical coherence tomography scans spaced 6 months apart over 1 year.

Association between toothbrushing behavior and cardiometabolic multimorbidity among middle aged and older adults in North China: a cross-section study.

BMC Oral Health

November 2024

China Center for Health Development Studies, Peking University, No.38 Xueyuan Road, Haidian District, Beijing, 100191, China.

Objectives: To evaluate the association between toothbrushing behavior and cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM) among middle-aged and older adults.

Methods: Data from the Beijing Health Service Survey were used to estimate the association between toothbrushing behavior and the risk of CMM using multilevel logistic models (N = 18,158).

Results: There were 554 patients with CMM, with a prevalence of 3.

Article Synopsis
  • Project HERCULES created a detailed natural history model for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) that outlines eight health states, including varying levels of ambulatory and non-ambulatory conditions.
  • The study analyzed data from 1,173 DMD patients, revealing that older age correlates with worse motor, pulmonary, and cardiac functionalities as patients progress through the health states.
  • Key metrics like the North Star Ambulatory Assessment (NSAA) score and forced vital capacity (FVC) indicate significant declines in function from the early ambulatory state to advanced stages, emphasizing the need for improved economic modeling and decision-making in DMD treatment.

Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) is a prototype RNA virus that has been instrumental in advancing our understanding of viral molecular biology and has applications in vaccine development, cancer therapy, antiviral screening, and more. Current VSV genome plasmids for purchase or contract virus services provide limited options for modification, restricted to predefined cloning sites and insert locations. Improved methods and tools to engineer VSV will unlock further insights into long-standing virology questions and new opportunities for innovative therapies.
