Background: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a systemic condition that might lead to dysphagia because of massive osteophytes that may be present at multiple levels. Confirming the symptomatic level to guide surgical management and avoid extensive surgery is important, however, there is no globally accepted consensus on the topic.

Case Description: We report the case of a 51-year-old man, with no specific past medical history, who has been complaining of a 3-months pain in the left side of the tongue base with sensation of a lump in the throat and dysphagia.

Medical large language models are vulnerable to data-poisoning attacks.

Nat Med

January 2025

Department of Neurosurgery, NYU Langone Health, New York, NY, USA.

The adoption of large language models (LLMs) in healthcare demands a careful analysis of their potential to spread false medical knowledge. Because LLMs ingest massive volumes of data from the open Internet during training, they are potentially exposed to unverified medical knowledge that may include deliberately planted misinformation. Here, we perform a threat assessment that simulates a data-poisoning attack against The Pile, a popular dataset used for LLM development.

A Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-Based Antimicrobial Peptide Delivery System with Enhanced Anticancer Activity and Low Systemic Toxicity.

Pharmaceutics

December 2024

Xinjiang Key Laboratory of Biological Resources and Genetic Engineering, College of Life Science and Technology, Xinjiang University, Urumqi 830046, China.

Background: The clinical efficacies of anticancer drugs are limited by non-selective toxic effects on healthy tissues and low bioavailability in tumor tissue. Therefore, the development of vehicles that can selectively deliver and release drugs at the tumor site is critical for further improvements in patient survival.

Methods: We prepared a CEC nano-drug delivery system, CEC@ZIF-8, with a zeolite imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) as a carrier, which can achieve the response of folate receptor (FR).

Unlabelled: Patients with severe traumatic brain injury (STBI) often experience an abnormal hemostasis that contributes to mortality and unfavorable neurological outcomes.

Objectives: We aimed to analyze epidemiologic, clinical, and laboratory factors associated with mortality in patients with STBI during the first 48 h after in-hospital admission.

Methods: We performed an observational retrospective study of STBI patients with associated extracranial trauma [defined as Injury Severity Score (ISS) ≥ 16 with an Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) head and neck ≥ 3 and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) ≤ 8] admitted to a Level II trauma center over seven years (2015-2021).
