Background: The correlation between () and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is complex. Some studies showed a protective role of infection against GERD. This study was aimed at assessing the role of infection in GERD utilizing a large cohort of patients diagnosed with GERD.
Methods And Materials: All patients who underwent gastroscopy for an indication of GERD during the study period between 2015 and 2017 at the EMMS Nazareth Hospital were considered eligible for the study and therefore were included. infection was determined by the rapid urease test or histology. Severity of esophagitis was assessed using the Los Angeles classification. Univariate analysis was performed to figure out differences between patients according to infection status. Multivariate regression analysis was conducted to illustrate the predictors of positivity for infection.
Results: 2,508 GERD patients were included with a median age of 49.42 ± 17.96 years. infection was detected in 299 (11.9%) patients. GERD patients with infection were found to be younger (48.83 ± 17.42 years versus 44.57 ± 17.69 years, < 0.001), have the tendency to smoke more (1406 (63.6%) versus 266 (89.0%), < 0.001), and use more proton pump inhibitors or PPIs (1314 (59.5%) versus 242 (80.9%), < 0.001). In multivariate regression analysis, age (OR 0.987, < 0.001), smoking status (OR 0.190, < 0.001), use of ASA/NSAIDs (OR 1.652, = 0.004), and use of statins (OR 0.499 (95%CI 0.295-0.846), = 0.010) were found significant among -positive individuals. -positive subjects have less severe esophagitis and more hiatus hernia.
Conclusion: Patients with GERD and infection were significantly younger, tended to smoke more, and used more PPIs and had significantly lower grades of esophagitis compared to noninfected ones.

Background: Biliary atresia (BA) is a progressive liver disease even after Kasai portoenterostomy (KPE), and the most common cause of liver transplant (LT) in the pediatric population. This study aimed to unveil the risk factors for LT in BA patients post-KPE.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of BA patients in a northern Taiwan Children's Medical Center from Jan 2000 to Oct 2020.

Purpose: To compare the effectiveness and safety of CT-guided iodine-125 seed brachytherapy in conjunction with chemotherapy against chemotherapy alone for the management of intermediate and advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) lacking oncogenic driving genes.
Methods And Materials: Retrospective analysis was conducted on clinical data from 128 patients diagnosed with intermediate and advanced non-small cell lung cancer who received iodine-125 combined with chemotherapy or chemotherapy alone due to the absence of oncogenic driver gene mutations. The patients in two groups were compared at 6-month follow-up for objective remission rate (ORR), Disease control rate (DCR), local progression-free survival (LPFS), overall survival (OS), clinical symptom improvement, and adverse events.

Wound bacterial infections not only impede the healing process but can also give rise to a range of serious complications, thereby posing a substantial risk to human health. Developing effective wound dressings incorporating phototherapy functionalities, specifically photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT), remains a critical area of research in modern wound care. Existing PTT-PDT systems often suffer from challenges such as nanoparticle aggregation and inefficient reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, which are essential for therapeutic efficacy.

Objectives: Infections by Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacterales in hospitals represent a severe threat but little is known on outbreaks in rehabilitation wards caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae producing Klebsiella pneumoniae Carbapenemase (KPC-Kp). We report an outbreak by KPC-Kp, in a Neurorehabilitation Unit in Italy, analysed through Whole-Genome Sequencing (WGS) for transmission routes reconstruction to improve management of KPC-Kp infections in rehabilitation units.
Methods: We investigated cases and KPC-Kp isolates collected from February to October 2022 from hospital surveillance.

Around 10% of cases of primary hyperparathyroidism are thought to be genetic in origin, some of which are part of a syndromic form such as multiple endocrine neoplasia types 1, 2A or 4 or hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor syndrome, while the remainder are cases of isolated familial primary hyperparathyroidism. Recognition of these genetic forms is important to ensure appropriate management according to the gene and type of variant involved, but screening for a genetic cause is not justified in all patients presenting primary hyperparathyroidism. The indications for genetic analysis have made it possible to propose a decision tree that takes into account whether the presentation is familial or sporadic, syndromic or isolated, patient age, and histopathological type of parathyroid lesion.
