Objective: To determine a method to reduce specimen hemolysis rates in pediatric blood specimens.
Methods: A total of 290 blood specimens from pediatric patients were classified into the capped group or uncapped group. The hemolysis index and levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were measured using an automated biochemical analyzer. Also, we performed a paired test to measure the concentration of free hemoglobin in specimens from 25 randomly selected healthy adult volunteers, using a direct spectrophotometric technique.
Results: The hemolytic rate of capped specimens was 2-fold higher than that of uncapped specimens. We found significant differences for LDH. Also, there was a significant difference in the concentration of free hemoglobin in the random-volunteers test.
Conclusions: Eliminating the residual negative pressure of vacuum blood-collection tubes was effective at reducing the macrohemolysis and/or microhemolysis rate.

Background: Social support is relevant to studying well-being, quality of life, and health during aging, particularly in people over 50. Therefore, brief instruments that allow its measurement within the clinical evaluation and research processes are necessary. The ENRICH Social Support Scale (ESSI) is a brief and easy-to-use instrument that measures the perception of social support; however, its psychometric properties in people over 50 in the Chilean context have yet to be tested.

Unlabelled: Human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype predicts cervical cancer risk, and genotyping could help guide the management of HPV positives as part of cervical screening. An isothermal amplification HPV extended genotyping test (ScreenFire HPV RS assay) can assay up to 96 samples/controls in 1 hour plus preparation time. A novel format with pre-aliquoted reagents and an anti-contamination component (Zebra BioDome) could simplify the HPV testing process and reduce the chances of post-amplification contamination.

Elranatamab is an effective drug for triple-class-exposed relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (TCE-RRMM). In the pivotal study, only grade 1 or 2 immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS) were reported, and the risk factors for immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome have not yet been clearly elucidated. This case report documents the first case of grade 4 ICANS in a patient treated with elranatamab, presenting alongside grade 1 cytokine release syndrome (CRS).

Objectives: The End-of-Life Dementia-Comfort Assessment in Dying (EOLD-CAD) scale is one of the few outcome instruments designed to capture symptom burden and well-being among nursing home residents with dementia; however, psychometric evaluations of the EOLD-CAD are limited. Although the instrument is often used to assess outcomes prospectively, it was originally developed and tested as a postmortem assessment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the instrument properties of the EOLD-CAD using staff reports from a large sample of nursing home residents with cognitive impairment prior to death.

The role of neoadjuvant endocrine therapy (NET) in clinically node-positive (cN+), HR+, HER2- patients is evaluated in this meta-analysis.
Methods: This study was performed between January 2010 and August 2022.
