The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) is a nuclear receptor and nutrition factor which takes part in the cellular signaling by several agonists such as pioglitazone. PPARγ can serve as potential target in treatments of metabolic syndrome diseases and/or hypertension. In the present study we investigated the effects of pioglitazone, a PPARγ agonist, on hypertension development in young and adult borderline hypertensive rats (BHR). In renal signaling we observed connections between PPARγ and Nrf2, antioxidant in adult animals and differences between young and adult BHR in Nrf2-activated detoxificant outputs (NQO1, HO-1) and NO-synthases. Blood pressure in animals had been detected by cuff plethysmography, cell signaling in the kidney was studied by gene expression determination using qPCR, and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity was measured by radioactive detection. Pioglitazone treatment in adult BHR caused no detectable changes in antioxidant and detoxificant responses. The main effects were observed in blood pressure improvement, endothelial NOS expression and NOS activities in both young and adult BHR.

Anxiety and depression disorders show high prevalence rates, and stress is a significant risk factor for both. However, studies investigating the interplay between anxiety, depression, and stress regulation in the brain are scarce. The present manuscript included 124 law students from the LawSTRESS project.

Using harmonicity to facilitate binaural fusion.

JASA Express Lett

January 2025

Speech and Hearing Science Department, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Champaign, Illinois 61820,

Harmonicity is an organizing principle in the auditory system, facilitating auditory object formation. The goal of the current study is to determine if harmonicity also facilitates binaural fusion. Participants listened to pairs of two-tone harmonic complex tones that were harmonically or inharmonically related to each other.

In three studies (total N = 622), the effects of threat to control on subsequent moral judgement were examined. After recalling a lack-of-control experience, participants evaluated the morality of a protagonist's decisions in a series of incongruent moral dilemmas. We found that a control-threatening reminder made moral judgements more utilitarian on the deontological-utilitarian dimension, which is consistent with the control motivation theory.

Background: Acne is an inflammatory skin disease afflicting the majority of the world's population at some point in their lifetime, and is seen to be chronic in about 50% of cases. Acne leads to significant social withdrawal, depression, and disfiguring scars in many cases. Available treatments are characterized by high rates of relapse, dangerous side effects, and social stigma, which often leads to poor patient compliance and treatment failure.

Hepatitis B (Hep B) remains a critical public health issue globally, particularly in Tibet, where vaccination rates and influencing factors among college students are yet understudied. This study applies a cross-sectional design to investigate the Hep B vaccination rate among 1,126 college students in Tibet and utilizes the expanded theory of planned behavior (ETPB) to identify vaccination behavior intention (BI) and vaccination behavior (VB). Stratified cluster sampling across three universities was used to assess behavioral attitudes (BA), subjective norms (SN), perceived behavioral control (PBC), past vaccination history (PVH) and vaccination knowledge (VK), and used structural equation modeling (SEM) for model validation and multi-group comparison.
